The Gorenska region
The Upper Gorenjska Region
Situated in the north-western part of the country, Gorenjska is the most Alpine of all Slovenian regions. It borders on Austria and Italy and is criss-crossed by well-developed transport infrastructure. The Gorenjska region is famous for its natural beauty and friendly people. Most of the region is covered by the Julian Alps with numerous peaks exceeding 2000 m. The Julian Alps and Triglav National Park are rich with plant and animal life, and home to wildlife as the lynx, wolf and bear. There are many opportunities for outdoor activities including hiking, skiing, ski-touring, rafting, paragliding, etc. Gorenjska is home to lakes Bled and Bohinj. Lake Bled was formed after the recession of the Bohinj glacier. It is up to 2120 m long and up to 1380 m wide, its maximum depth being 30.6 m. A small island in the middle of the lake is home to the Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church; visitors frequently ring its bell for good luck. Perched on a rock overlooking the lake is the iconic Bled Castle. Lake Bohinj is also a glacier lake, but it’s twice bigger. In addition it’s also colder because it has many inflows. If you will be looking at pictures of a beautiful region, you will recognize Bohinj’s valley by St. Janez’s church and the stone bride next to it.
Bled area
Bled area
Due to its natural beauty, Bled, together with its surroundings, ranks among the most beautiful alpine resorts, renowned for its mild, healing climate and thermal lake water.
Bled lies in the northwestern part of Slovenia, between the Sava Bohinjka and Sava Dolinka rivers. It is accessible in all seasons. The Lesce-Bled railway station (4 km) lies on the Villach - Jesenice - Ljubljana - Belgrade - Istanbul - Athens railway line. It is approximately 45 km from the national borders with Austria and Italy. The nearest international airport at Brnik is 40 km away.
Bled is famous for the Lake, castle and island with the pilgrimage church. It is possible to swim in the lake and there are many opportunities to rent a boat as well. The island church with its bell invites all visitors. The best way to get to the island is by the traditional Bled special boat called “Pletna”. The castle is arranged as an exhibition area. There is a museum, printing works, castle cellar, herbal gallery, restaurant and souvenir shop. Bled castle attracts visitors not only with it sage and picturesque architecture but also for the unforgettable view of the lake and the wider area of Gorenjska and the Julian Alps. Coachmen called “Fijaker” can take you for a ride around the lake and to Bled Castle. Fijakers are one of the Bled’s symbols, but we should not forget to mention cream cakes. Although you can buy them elsewhere, those from Bled are simply the best. Bled offers many opportunities outdoor activities for everyone – from golf, hiking, rafting and skiing in winter time to fishing. Slovenia and its regions offers many sightseeing trips like Julijan Alps, capital city Ljubljana, world famous Postojna Caves, Lipica – home of famous Lipizzaner Horses, and there are littoral towns Piran and Portoroz. Slovenia is a small country and it is possible to be on the other side of the county just in few hours. At night you should visit many bars, restaurants and nightclubs, or you can try your luck in Bled’s casino.
How to get there
