The Brittany / Morbihan region

Morbihan, France is the central area of the five departments of Brittany, North France. Morbihan is famous for its megalithic sites, which pre-date the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge in Britain. The area is dotted with menhirs and dolmens, the origins of which are still not certain. Many believe they are ancient maps of constellations, some that they are an early calendar and others that they are memorials, but the mysterious rocks are impressive.

Our gite in Morbihan give you access to fine beaches, unspoiled rural areas, with rivers full of fish and forests with wild deer and wild boar.

Things to do on holiday in Morbihan:
Morbihan has a long and fascinating history. The megalithic site of Carnac is celebrated as one of the finest, and is thought to date back as far as 5000BC. There are also castles from the Hundred Years War at Josselin and Pontivy, and the World War II submarine pens in Lorient, which have been well preserved.

Towns in Morbihan:
Vannes remains a medieval town at heart with ramparts, half timbered houses and the Cathedral quarter of the city, based around the impressive Cathedral St Pierre. The towns of Pontivy and Rochefort en-Terre also aid the medieval feel of the department, with crocked stone streets and magnificent squares.

Auray is a beautiful port town, and welcomes thousands of Christian pilgrims each year to Sainte-Anne-d’Auray. This is also one of the best places in Morbihan to go sailing, or take a cruise around the islands of Morbihan.

No one is entirely sure how many islands lie in the Gulf of Morbihan. This is mainly due to the differing definitions of an island. Is a piece of land which is cut off from the mainland at high tide considered an island? Because of this, there are somewhere between 40 and 365 islands in the Gulf.

Quiberon is Morbihan’s premium beach resort town and has a huge number of golden beaches to offer.

Blavet Valley / Lintivic area

The small hamlet of Lintivic is close to the town of Baud, a typical small French town with the usual array of pleasant Shops. Camor Forest, with its pleasant network of footpaths and the famous Camor Adventure Forest, is within a 5 minute drive.

The beautiful River Blavet can be reached in fifteen minutes by car. Here you can stroll or cycle along the tow path, take a trip on a barge or sit by the riverside cafe and watch the world go by! The river is also an ideal spot for fishing and canoeing.

Horse riding is a very popular pastime in the area and there are a number of fine livery stables within easy reach.

There are many traditional local markets throughout the week in nearby towns and villages and various festivals celebrating everything from life at sea to pardoning your donkey!
