Cockatoo Court and our other gites have access through the beautiful rear gardens to the River Blavet, renowned for fishing, and the tow-path for leisurely walks or cycle rides. There is a large communal terrace with barbecue and seating for up to 20 people. The garden is furnished with picnic tables, hammocks, badminton net etc.

The Brittany / Morbihan region

SHOPPING, EATING & DRINKING Supermarket, petrol station, medical facilities, vet for pet passports, boulangerie for fresh bread and croissants are to be found in Plumeliau just ten minutes driving distance. There are two major hypermarkets – LeClerc and Intermarche – just outside Pontivy where there is also very good local shopping in Pontivy itself. There is also a large Intermarche hypermarket as you enter Baud.

There are numerous bars, low cost restaurants and sports facilities including free tennis in Plumeliau. There is also a section of the river where local people swim although there are also indoor and outdoor pools in Pontivy and Baud.

For those in the know there are a number of Routier restaurants in the area where you can enjoy a 5 course meal including all your wine for €10 (at today’s rate about £7). We will be happy to give you details of these when you arrive. Be warned – there is no menu selection but the food is always good, tasty and plentiful. Besides the routiers you will be spoiled for choice with dozens of restaurants in the area where the average spend is about €9-€12 for lunch and slightly more for dinner.

Blavet Valley / St Nicolas des Eaux area

SIGHTSEEING Worth a visit is the 16th century chapel St Nicodeme at Talvern-Neneze at the entrance to St Nicolas des Eaux, the amazing Chateau at Pontivy or take a boat trip through the locks to see the famous St Gildas Chapel.

Our central position brings just about everywhere in Brittany within driving reach, including numerous beaches, the inland gulf of Morbihan and coastal, archaeological and historical attractions such as those at Pontivy, Carnac, La Baule and mediaeval Concarneau, France's biggest fishing port.

MARKETS There is a market somewhere every day of the week but a must is the Sunday market at Larmor Plage, near Lorient (about 30 minutes drive) for the wonderful cooked foods for your Sunday repast. There are spit roasted chickens, crackling-rich pork, spit roasted rabbit, and even paella, Chinese and Vietnamese hot food to take home or eat on the lovely beach a short stroll from the market. A list of local markets can be found in your accommodation on arrival.

HORSE-RIDING If horse-riding or pony trekking is your interest, there are a number of friendly, welcoming stables in the local area who cater for all levels of skill, from beginners to experienced. Riding through the Blavet Valley and surrounding woodland and forests is an absolute delight.

FISHING AND GOLF available locally with some of the best fishing in the River Blavet and numerous excellent golf courses within easy driving distance.

THE VILLAGE

We promise you that you will fall in love with St Nicolas des Eaux – one of the most delightful and picturesque villages in the whole of Brittany. St Nicolas des Eaux is the very heart of the stunning Blavet Valley where the local people have taken great pride in its appearance with a multitude of flowers adorning the river bank. Whilst staying at La Maison Magique you can abandon your car for the duration of your holiday, except for the occasional trip to the supermarket and the local markets to stock up. Fresh bread and pain au chocolat is available daily from our car park.

Just a very short stroll from your front door you will find several welcoming riverside bars, restaurants and creperies, self-drive boat hire, bike hire, canoeing/kayaking and pedaloes. All the bars and restaurants have large outdoor terraces overlooking the river and eating and drinking is comparatively low cost. Early evening is a favourite time to sit and sip your wine and watch the world go by.

Next door to Cockatoo Court is a large, free open-air swimming pool set in attractive gardens with its own pool-side bar and sun loungers. There is a play area for the children, crazy golf and a boules court. Here you can relax and forget the children for a few hours. If you prefer to relax on your own patio or in the grounds of La Maison Magique there is a large lawned area and woodland leading to the towpath for the children to run free.

At festival times in the summer there are open-air dances, fetes and other open-air activities, usually free.

The river Blavet is wide, slow-moving and navigable, abounds with wildlife and is one of France's finest angling rivers. Daily or period angling permits, are available.

This is a quiet spot for those seeking more placid activities such as birdwatching, sketching, walking, cycling, angling, canoeing, swimming, river excursions, eating and drinking. Sports such as tennis and bowls (both free) and golf are close at hand.
