The Brittany / Morbihan region

The Breton people are extremely warm and welcoming and the region possesses a unique culture. Although French is the primary language, older generations also speak Breton (western Brittany) and Gallo (eastern Brittany). The Breton language is most similar to Welsh and Cornish with many common words.
The traditional building material is local granite, although there are many examples of medieval half-timbered buildings. Chateaux are set in a green countryside, which is criss-crossed with beautiful waterways such as the nearby Blavet and L'Evel rivers and the Nantes-Brest canal. The area is famous for its prehistoric sites such as the standing stones at Carnac and the burial mounds on the islands of the Gulf of Morbihan, a large inland sea. Brittany's coastline - some 3,000 kms of it - stretches from the northern Channel coast around to the Atlantic in the West and offers a choice of large sandy beaches and spectacular granite rocks.
Brittany is famous for its seafood dishes and crepes and there are many excellent, local restaurants at which to sample the local 'fare'.
The Blavet Valley / Baud area
The cottage is centrally placed for a number of towns. Baud and Locmine are just ten minutes away for essential shopping trips and browsing the weekly street markets. Pontivy, a larger centre with an impressive chateau and a mixture of medieval and Napoleonic architecture, is 15 minutes away. The cities of Vannes and Lorient are only 30 minutes away, and offer visitors everything from old sea ports and historic sites to rainy-day attractions for families with kids.
Throughout the summer, towns and villages hold festivals - Fez Noz - to celebrate their cultural heritage and the city of Lorient, some 30 minutes away, hosts the Inter-Celtic Festival of music and dance which attracts over half a million spectators.
The immediate area offers guests miles of gentle, family walks and cycle rides. For the more active, local lakes offer opportunities for sailing, canoeing and waterskiing - all with equipment hire. A ten-minute drive will take guests to a 9-hole golf course.
