The Brittany region

The Morbihan region of southern Brittany is a quiet fishing and farming region of France and is blessed with a beautiful and varied coastline and an interior of lush farmland, woods and moors to delight the country lovers. The native Breton people, of Celtic descent appreciate their visitors and provide a warm welcome.

Their local 'Pardons' and 'Fetes', regional costumes, music, dances, legends and language maintained by the Bretons are a large part of the area's unique charm.

Brittany 's restaurants and bistros supply some of the best of French provincial cooking, very reasonably priced and in generous proportions. You can't leave without sampling its 'fruits de mer', crepes and cider.

Brittany 's rolling hills, dense forests and lazy rivers, offer a variety of activities; from walking, riding and cycling to fishing and canoeing.

The rich architectural and archaeological heritage provide for excellent one-day tours; the fascinating towns of Pontivy, Josselin, Dinan and Vannes are full of historical interest.

Then, of course, there are the megaliths, churches and for the stout-hearted there's the 'quest for the Holy Grail' and the Arthurian legend.

To the south, a short traffic-free drive away, is the beautiful Golfe du Morbihan, a yachtsman's paradise, with all manner of water-sports and numerous little islands to visit on the regular ferries.

Or just relax in the sunshine on an endless choice of beautiful beaches.

Additionally the large lakes at Guerledan and Priziac offer excellent facilities for swimming, boating and sunbathing. Each cottage has details of local amenities and resorts to help you plan your holiday.

Blavet Valley

The lovely walled town of Vannes is a must on any visit to Morbihan. Take a walk around the narrow, cobbled streets, through the medieval gates, before settling down for lunch at a café alongside the attractive marina. If you’re with the kids, head down to the Parc du Golfe for a look around the aquarium and Jardin aux Papillons (butterfly garden).

• Saint-Goustan

Once one of the busiest ports in Brittany, picture-perfect St-Goustan is now one of the most popular sites in Morbihan. Enjoy lunch in a waterside restaurant while admiring the half-timbered houses before joining a boat trip around the gulf or crossing the stone bridge to explore Auray.

• Guerlédan

West of Mûr-de-Bretagne is the Lac de Guerlédan, Brittany’s largest lake. Not only is this the perfect place for sunning yourself or messing about on the water but the area also offers extensive trails for walking and cycling. The Quénécan forest and Abbaye de Bon Repos are not to be missed.

There are numerous activities too within 40 minutes of the cottage... The Canors Adventure Forest for fun in the trees; canoeing on the Blavet; watersports at Lakes Guerledan and Ploemel; horse riding; golf...

5/5

"Wonderfully peaceful location, but not too isolated."

I arrived in mid-afternoon, having followed the simple and clear directions. I was met by the friendly owners who helped me with my bags to the gites. First impressions of both did definitely not disappoint! I was immediately struck by the wonderful view across the valley, together with the lightness and airiness of the house. It was perfect for the quiet two-weeks break to which I had so looked forward. The days absolutely flew by, just like the jays and other birds who happily and visibly perch in nearby trees. The owners (who live on site) are very kind and approachable, but remained unobtrusive throughout my stay. I really enjoyed my break and would suggest that this is the ideal place for a get-away-from-it-all, de-stressing holiday. I will return next year, simple as that!
