The Tayside/Perthshire region
Perthshire is at the heart of Scotland, known as the Big County. Most of Perthshire is little more than one hour by road or rail from Glasgow or Edinburgh, but boasts a unique blend of high mountains and glens with rolling hills and fertile valleys.
The capital city of Perth offers visitors a great variety of independent shops, cafes, restaurants, art galleries and theatres. Set between two grand public parks, with Scone Palace and Perth Race Course on its edge, Perth is a lovely city offering the best in shopping, nightlife and culture.
Blairgowrie and Rattray lie on either side of the River Ericht as it emerges from the spectacular red sandstone gorges of Strathmore. Surrounded by rolling hills and at the gateway to stunning mountain scenery and the Cairngorm National Park which lies 14 miles to the north on the A93 on the Royal Deeside National Touring Route this small county town enjoys a truly blessed situation.
Historically, Blairgowrie and Rattray played their part in Scotland’s linen industry and the community rapidly expanded, the swift waters of the Ericht powering the textile mills on its banks. Later still, the emphasis switched to soft fruit production, with the prevailing weather providing just the right mix of sun and moisture for the local raspberries.
Today, the working mills have gone but a walk along the Riverside Walk examples of these once busy mills remain some empty some tastefully converted. The World Famous Blairgowrie Raspberries, as well as strawberries and other soft fruits thankfully remain and are available to buy locally in shops or from the Farmer's direct at the roadside, in season.
Blairgowrie, or "Blair" as it is known locally boasts a fantastic mix of locally-run independent businesses and better known High Street names and is a great place to spend time in with the added bonus of being a great base for touring, with many well known visitor attractions within 30 minutes such as Glamis Castle, Scone Palace, the Famous Grouse Whisky Experience and Discovery Point in Dundee.

"Excellent Accommodation - can't wait to return."
"Isla Lodge was the ideal choice for our weekend getaway to meet up with friends just before Christmas. After a very warm welcome from Kay and Alan, we settled into the lodge which had everything we needed and the central heating was excellent which was great as it was such a cold weekend. . It had a great quiet location & the wooded valley gives it a "hidden" setting. We enjoyed watching the birds & squirrels and listening to the river. The town of Blairgowrie was only a short walk away and we enjoyed some great Christmas shopping, buying lots of small gifts and some bigger ones too. We also enjoyed a fantastic meal in Littles restaurant. There seemed to be a good choice of walking nearby and Kay recommended the short walk round by the river which was just what we needed on the Sunday morning! The lodge was great value for money and will definitely be back and take the whole family next time!
Many thanks for your super review, we are so happy that you had a great weekend and thrilled that you are thinking about coming back to visit us and our lovely town and area.
