Friendly people, fresh air, a hot Mediterranean sun and refreshing river swimming a wonderful place to be

All pleasures you can look forward to as you wake up in a comfortable well decorated home. You pour your first cup of coffee and have it on the upper terrace where you can enjoy a commanding view over the village listening to it slowly coming to life.

You wander down to one of the two excellent boulangeries to buy a baguette, or treat yourself to one of the wonderful looking (and calorie filled) cakes, followed by breakfast sitting on the patio enjoying the sun.

This is a description of my favourite part of the day whenever we stay in Bize.

You can fill your day swimming, visiting one of the many interesting sites in the area or perhaps take one of the plentiful country walks right on your door step. There is a stable close by where you are able to take a ride through the hills enjoying the views at your leisure "Les Appaloosas du Pech". You can even hire a canoe and take a fun but relaxing paddle along the river Aude. Another recomendation is to explore some of the small local vignerons, and their wines.

In the evenings there are a good selection of quality restaurants that are very good value for money. Eating alfresco with a quality bottle of wine, which is very local, with good friends, is a great right way to end a perfect summers day.

Further details

The river cesse runs throught the village and every year a levee is built to dam the water around the foot bridge (Passerellel ) and creates a wonderful swimming area which is well used, during the summer months there is a lifeguard on duty in the afternoons to ensure the saftey of all. Very popular with even with the very youngest of children.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Located in the department of Aude in the Languedoc-Roussillon regeion, in the foothills of the Black Mountains. Part of an area proudly known as Cathar country, a history and people made famous due to a crusade against the local religion by the catholic church back in the year 1209.

Places of interest include,

-The castles of Monttsegur,Lastours and Peyrepertuse, to name a few.

-Ancient excavation of city of d'Ensérune. Roman, Greek and older.

Most villages have a fete (festival) at some time during the year ,usually to celebrate something produced locally. Bize have theirs "Fete de Olivier" (olive festival) some time during the 2 week period around 14 July (Bastille Day) to create give or take two weeks of festivities, with two nights of very impressive fire work displays. A great time of year.

The canal du Midi is also a short 10 min drive away, lovely to cycle/walk along, have a picnic and greet people who cruise along this historic canal.

Another interesting village is Aigne due to its tight snail like street plan for medieval defence.

Within walking distance you can find l'Oulibo de Bize-Minervois which is an award winning and world famous olive co-operative with outstanding olive type products of all kinds. Highly recommended.

Bicycle hire is available from "mellow velos" the company will deliver and pick up bikes from the house.

Canoe / kayaking is also available nearby in Pucheric.
