The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region

The region of Abruzzo is 75% unspoilt National Park area. The countryside is perhaps best described as being like Tuscany except more dramatic and diverse with mountains and great beach resorts as well. It’s certainly very colourful at different times and autumn is a particularly lovely time. The coastal areas are well established beach resorts many of which are lined with unusual palm type trees. It's perhaps best to think of Abruzzo in four parts, beach, countryside, lakes and mountains. Italian holidaymakers flock to this coast in summer which always tends to peak in August. There are several roads that hug the coast all the way down the 133km of beach and a railway line. Summers can be blistering hot and winters a lot milder than the Uk for example. It seems rather odd having the mountains this far south in a country surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the climate is therefore very different. The mountains strangely therefore have their own micro-climate and what is a common cliché of skiing in the morning and sunbathing on the beach or swimming in the afternoon is actually quite true and they are only, what, an hour apart. It’s very important therefore to read signposting very carefully and don’t scoff when its 80 degrees outside the air conned environment of the car and they are suggesting snow chains on a route up the mountain. I’m making light of it but it can be true.

The mountain range has been described as the spine of Italy for obvious reasons. The nearest range is the Gran Sasso, but both this and the Majella range are easily accessible. Cable cars and chair lifts work in the summer also out of ski season so a good day out is up in the mountains. There is at least one maybe more places to hire mountain bikes for the energetic in the mountains. A great alternative to the road under the mountain is going over the top. Apparently you can see both coasts of the Mediterranean from up in the mountains at a certain place. There are some superb walks and mountain trails to walk, bike, or do on horseback.

There is a flat plateau with lakes and a glacier, and some great straight roads leading to superb villages such as Santo Stefano Di Sessantia which hosts the unusual and exceptional Sextantia hotel. (So named after a six mile trade run apparently). This was an very old medieval abandoned village until it was fairly recently restored to an exceptional high standard retaining all the old charm. Its a fantastic day out or overnight stay. There are some lovely small shops and sone fantastic places to eat at very affordable prices mainly. The Sextantia offers the finest top end quality. If you like spooky you'll love this village which won Italy's best kept village. There’s some great reasonable priced accommodation there, and some great little touristy shops.
There are superb villages coming down from the mountains such as Casteli famous for its ceramic which is sold in many local shops. There are some beautiful village’s towns and cities in the region many worth visiting and steeped in history. These might include Penne a walled old town next to Lake Penne where there is a nature reserve. (20mins) Atri is another similar small walled town. (20 mins)

The city of Teramo has a historic centre and some great shops. There's an awful lot of history amongst the old buildings which I'm afraid as impressive and luring as I find them, I couldn't tell you any history behind them. Pontius Pilate was apparently born in Bisenti !

Some of the religious places are simply stunning even if that's not your scene you will be mightily impressed by the sheer size and quality of workmanship from a bygone age. Abruzzo fortunately hasn't been ruined by rip off tourism prices and its a refreshing change not to pay Tuscany prices. People are very gentle, warm, helpful, and honest with some great old fashioned values in life. You will get a very genuine feel for the real beautiful Italy here.

If you want to check on the general area or beaches, try looking at Microsoft maps, (type in 'live-maps' ) in your browser. There is a 'birds eye' photographic view of some (not all) areas particularly around major cities and beaches, for example Pescara. You will see that the beach runs right up the Abruzzo coast, and that there are both busy and isolated beaches. Or try 'Google earth' where you will see lots of photographs everywhere from the beaches to the hills to the mountains to towns the city and some villages.

Please feel free to ask questions about the Villa or general area, just email me using the Contact Owner form at the bottom of the page.

Bisenti / Appignano area

The nearest village is easy walking distance very quaint with a tiny bar, some lovely pretty houses and a very impressive church.

The next nearest bigger village is 3km with all shopping needs, chemist, 2 supermarkets, chocolate shop, shoe shop, bars eateries, bank with ATM outside, petrol station and many others. Another 2 very scenic hilltop villages are a similar distance away.

There are many other villages within easy reach, a vineyard you can get a really nice 5 litre red refill for 7 euros, and countless restaurants. There’s a great festival in Appignano in August which is like a play that moves around the village. In Bisenti there is an annual wine festival one weekend in early October. There are markets every day in different locations around the area. Most mornings superb Porcetta and Pollo (chicken) vans arrive, selling marinated roasted pork sandwiches (delicious) chicken and Italian hams. The local bars serve great food ice cream, snacks and cakes and are a great place to chill and watch the world go by.

There are lots of festivals during the year although August is the main month for many. There are fireworks regularly and some village will be celebrating many different things. Abruzzo is famous for its food and it’s rare to find anything less than excellent. Try the Arrosticini, a tiny snacky sort of kebab on a skewer which is simply marinated lamb in garlic, rosemary, olive oil and Italian spices and barbecued. (very tasty) There are countless coastal resorts to visit and a variety of routes to admire the scenery on the way. These include Pineto, Rosetto, Silvi, Pescara, Montesilvano San Benneditto Del Tronto etc etc.

The beach can be reached in 30 to 40 mins depending on the route chosen. (there are many ways to get places which arnt always mapped) Historical towns and city trips are within very easy reach and amongst others include Atri, Penne, Teramo, Pescara, Ascoli Piceno, Lanciano. There are ferries from Pescara to a variety of destinations including (I believe) the Tremiti Islands. There's a huge brilliant water park for children and adults a short drive away which in itself is a great full day out with something for all ages.

How to get there

Flights from Europe are quite good. It’s a great road trip but a long way to drive from the UK. Transport links via train and bus are very good; however I would always recommend that you have a hire car. Driving in Abruzzo is great and for 99 per cent of the time is chilled, slow, quiet and so easy.

If this is your first time in Italy, or you would like some ideas on other places to visit please feel free to ask.

Ryanair Jet2 and Easy jet are some of the great budget companies who currently offer flights to Pescara, Rome, Ancona and Perugia from many UK airports. Car hire is available at all the airports and for a small fee you can take it back to a different airport if you a planning more of a tour.

As a rough guide,

Pescara is about 35 mins.
Rome about 2hr but a great easy and scenic drive and well worth the trip.
Ancona similar then down the coastal motorway see the huge waterpark
Rimini a little further than Ancona
Perugia about 3 hrs.

You can also fly to Pisa 5hrs, Florence about 4 or 5, or Bari in the south.

Hertz via the Ryanair site are fairly competitive, as are 'yourcar-hire' who offer a refund of the excess should you be unfortunate enough to make a claim.

Flights to Pescara tend to be from Stansted whereas more northern UK airports service Rome.

Driving from Rome is a preferred route, as it’s easy, scenic and enjoyable on the A24 motorway, under the spectacular Gran Sasso Mountains (alternative going over the top) then quiet and lovely countryside views. (There's no toll for the tunnel)

This is where some of the ski resorts are situated and you can drive over the mountains to ski resorts or for an even more scenic trip. (Snow chains needed in winter up here) Once off the motorway it’s like stepping into a different world and always enjoyable experience. Dependant on the time of year you might see all different coloured trees, blue lavender yellow and white blossom, fields of wild vibrant red poppies or thousands of crops of sunflowers as well as grapes olives and many other fruits.

Ryanair prices fluctuate and there are often unmissable offers but these are rarely at peak periods such as Easter. It's worth to keep checking because the prices change weekly / daily sometimes. Please contact us for further advice on booking or other destination ideas before and after the villa.

Italy is crammed full of gems and it’s sometimes good to plan some nights elsewhere such as Venice or Rome and see a bit of the country as well. If you would like any advice or ideas please contact us using the contact form below.

The Villa is a larger than average detached house with a 30ft x 16ft lounge with comfortable sofa's chunky wood occasional tables, full size hi-fi and a variety of CDs, TV / DVD and some English spoken channels inc. news etc. There is a small woodburning stove in the living room to supplement the kitchen stove and central heating if required.

ADSL broadband has now been installed to enable guests full wireless internet access anywhere in the house. This is particularly useful for those planning a working holiday, or simply keeping up with important matters, researching the area, or contacting friends and family. Skype accounts can of course be used to make free telephone calls anywhere in the world. This can also be used to access further TV channels.

There's lots of DVD films, books and a mountain of magazines on Italy and home improvements.

The bathroom has a double glass shower and looks out towards the mountains. A washing machine has been sited in the bathroom to avoid kitchen noise.

A new modern kitchen is fitted together with wood burning aga style stove for the winter. This is great to cook on. Theres a 4 ring gas hob, an electric conventional oven with grill, a modern microwave with grill, and a huge electric portable cooking pan for pasta currries soups broth or rice dishes, (for al fresco cooking) many spices for Italian or Indian food, cook books and huge butchers block. Stainless steel kettle. Theres a BBQ and Arrosticini BBQ for cooking outside.

There is a very large double bedroom on this level with easy access to the bathroom. This is ideal for an additional single bed / cot for a 7th person. This room is ideal for anyone with mobility issues due to its close easy access to the bathroom. The inner hallway leads to the 1st floor.

Upstairs are two more quality furnished double bedrooms. Both bedrooms have large double doors leading out onto a balcony, and windows overlooking the massive 1st floor terrace and spectacular views of the countryside and mountains. The upper hallway houses a leather settee and represents a quiet indoor area for reading or for use as an office or computer area. There are double doors from the hallway leading out onto the wonderful terrace.

The terrace and balcony area is a fantastic place to sit in the sun or shade by day and relax at night. It is furnished with an outdoor dining drinks table and numerous chairs. There are comfortable outdoor sofa's and chairs, an outdoor table to match, and a double teak hammock. The terrace can be used for sitting in the sun, or shade to marvel at the superb views.

There is a new modern log woodburning stove in the kitchen which runs central heating in the winter. The kitchen is new, modern, and very well stocked.

There are superb views of the countryside and mountain range from the two living room windows. The house is situated at just 300m above sea level so it benefits from a great climate much of the year. It can sometimes be still warm in the sun in January, yet snowy in the mountains.

If you are planning larger parties I can recommend, arrange or suggest other high quality reasonably priced Villas, apartments, B&B or hotels in the locality. The house is furnished to a high standard.

Further details outdoors:
The Villa is detached, set in its own grounds and not overlooked by any other house. Access is via a tarmac quiet road next to the Villa. There is enough parking space for several cars. Outside the entrance door are two Persimmon fruit trees which ripen to an orange red colour in November. Theres a seat in between the 2 trees which looks spectacular with vivid coloured fruit yet no leaves on the trees. There are a variety of herbs for use when cooking.

ADSL broadband is installed to enable guests full internet access particularly useful for those planning a working holiday, or simply keeping up with important matters, researching the area, or contacting friends and family.

The nearest restaurant is about 300 yards, and 500 yards or so to the next. There are lots of other superb places to eat nearby at exceptional value and quality.

In the village there is a large swimming pool, a Wolf museum and all shops and amenities including bank, ATM, two supermarkets, bars, eateries and some great vans selling Porcetta (whole roasted pork) which is simply delicious.

There is an excellent bus service on the doorstep. The nearest major train route is either at Pescara or Teramo.

A car is essential really but driving is actually very tranquil and enjoyable. The local roads are generally very quiet all year round even in mid summer. However, in summer the coast is very busy with mainly Italian tourists, and the roads are busy at the coast at the start or end of Siesta time. Parking is generally very well catered for and more often than not free where you would expect to pay..There is a river nearby and a nature trail about 10k away

There are two very detailed guides at the Villa one about Abruzzo in general, and one specific to the immediate area with suggestions from tried and tested places to visit to good restaurants and vineyards, to where to buy the best fresh pasta made locally. Its packed with tips for how to get the best from your stay in the Villa and general area.

The villa is suitable for any disabilities but please call to discuss the layout.

Guestbook for Villa Abruzzo

Review
My family and I stayed at this beautiful house in Abruzzo for 10 days. The views were breathtaking with a panoramic view of the whole valley and mountain range. On an evening after the kids had gone to bed we sat on the terrace and had a couple of glasses of wine with just the sound of the crickets in the background. The beaches were in easy reach only a short drive; they were always well kept and clean, with good restaurants/cafes. We were impressed with the food as the produce was always fresh and inexpensive in the rural locations. It is all Italian cuisine which we love anyway. One evening we walked to a festival in a village nearby which was fantastic and the kids really enjoyed it so much, they didn’t want to go to bed. Overall this was a fantastic holiday, the accommodation was first class, and we will be returning to Italy again.

I would be happy for you to contact me to discuss the holiday

2009
Just back from a fantastic week at Villa Abruzzo. The location is second to none for exploring the area and what a great pleasure to stay in a property that feels like a proper home. We can’t wait to book up again, but until then we will just have to live with the memories of the stunning views from the terrace, the mountains, the beaches, the food, the wine……………………………………………..

Chris, Angela, Vernon and Deborah.

2009
We planned one trip to Roseto beach but ended up going 4 times as it was easy to reach. The Villa was very well equipped, and nicely presented for us with complementary wine, bread, fresh juice, fruit, cheese milk and water. The information folder at the Villa was great, very full and informative, so thank you for that.

The Villa was very well presented for our arrival with complementary wine, bread, fresh fruit, cheese, milk, water were there for us, as well as various other useful items. The representative meeting us was very helpful, showing us around, and providing useful tips for everything that we might need during our stay, and some great directions to local facilities.

All in all it was fantastic 9 days and suffice to say we had a great time in a lovely area, in a beautiful Villa!

M&B from Scotland

Sept 2009

We both had a great holiday at Villa Abruzzo, the villa was just like home from home, everything we needed was provided for by the friendly owners. The area has a real rustic charm about it and the view of the Gran Sasso mountains from the terrace changes daily. Plenty of beaches within half an hour drive, cliff hugging villages steeped in history, good local eateries and wine on hand what more could you want (Recommend Mario's).
We all agreed that we would definitely come back again and soon.

Brian and Barbara (Plymouth)
