The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Landes region
The Atlantic coast in South West France are the best kept secret holiday destinations of the French people and those in the know internationally. Why? Miles of sandy white beaches, hot sunny weather, a pilgrimage destination for foodies (Gastronomes) and wine lovers (Oenophiles), lower prices and avoiding the crowds, traffic and expense of the Mediterranean and Paris may be a start.
Enjoy incredible restaurants, shopping and a variety of hotels in a romantic cityscape that is reflected into the great Garonne River and bordered with 53 kilometres of bike trails. The international 'Bordeaux Merignac Airport' and a SNCF fast train to and from Paris will easily get you to what the French refer to as 'The capital of the good life'!
The wine regions of Bordeaux surround the city of Bordeaux. These include the world’s most famous wine regions such as St. Emillion, Pomerol, Graves, Médoc, Entnre-Deux-Mers, Cotes de Blaye, Bourg, and Bordeaux. Explore some of Bordeaux’s 9,300 vineyards within 30 minutes from the city. A must visit is the medieval village of St. Emillion, called "the hill with a thousand château". Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, St. Emillion is recognized for its historical importance and its the world renowned wine. (Mydestination.com/bordeaux)
The Atlantic coast half an hour west of the city of Bordeaux, find the Cote D’Argent, Europe’s ‘s longest expanse of white sandy beach featuring Europe’s highest dune, 'Dune du Pyla' near Arcachon. Get ready for some of the most challenging surfing or just relax on the beach before fashion shopping or stopping off for a snack in the oyster capital of France, Cap Ferret, the Ile de Rey and Orleron. Other day trips will take you to the centre of Cognac, the most famous brandy region in the world, or to the lesser known eau de vie region of Armagnac. This is a spirit some believe more prized and complex than cognac.
Located in the southwest of France, the French love this region for its long hot summers and moderate winters. With its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, there are no temperature extremes. Summers are long, lasting from May until the beginning of October with average high temperatures equal to the French Riviera – averaging more than 26 degrees C in July and August. Temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s are common throughout the holiday months of June to September and October will still have many 20 plus degree days. (Source: Mydestination.com/bordeaux)
The Biscarrosse area
Our base in Biscarrosse is the perfect start to your road trip along The Côte d’Argent or, the Silver Coast. In Southwest France this is the coastline of the Aquitaine region stretching more than 200 km along the magnificent silvery sand beaches from the Gironde estuary in the north to as far south in France as Biarritz. Powerful rolling waves and miles of seascape draw families, celebrities, water lovers, surfers and wind surfers from all over the world. You’ll discover some of the best surfing beaches and surfing schools in Europe along this big sunny beach of crashing waves. (Mydestination.com/bordeaux)
Biscarrosse plage is a top holiday destination in it's own right with its big lakes and coast line provides amble camping spots and plenty of reason to enjoy being outdoors. Start your journey here and explore this plentiful region of surf, vineyards, cities and culture - in your own style with a classic vw camper van. 'C'est la belle vie'...

We saw this company via Groupon so entered into the short break somewhat nervous, we should know better, James had thought of everything, calling us when we were en route to make sure we knew where... more |

We flew into Bordeaux and spent a few days there before Rachel picked us up and took us to collect Virginia, the VW Splittie. From there we took a road trip down the south west coast from Arcachon to San Sebastian. The pace of life was so chilled, enjoying the beaches, good food and wine. We made a lot of friends along the way as Virginia attracts a lot of attention! James and Rachel are so friendly and helpful, it's a holiday we'll never forget and we can't wait to go back! |
