Ocean View is a newly renovated self catering cottage in Orkney. From April 2013, visitors to Orkney will be able to rent this beautiful and modern cottage, located in Birsay and can truly get away from it all!
Birsay is located at the North West tip of the island, and is just ten miles from Orkney's most famous attractions and twenty miles from Orkney's main towns, Stromness and Kirkwall.
Shops, restaurants and bars are nearby but, as the name suggests, Ocean View is a quiet and relaxing place - with a stunning view northwards over the Atlantic.
We've renovated Ocean View and have tastefuly decorated the house. Though the exterior resembles a traditional Orkney cottage, the interior is modern. The house sleeps four in two bedrooms - one double room and one twin room with two single beds. Ocean View has a huge kitchen / diner and a lovely sitting room to relax in after a busy day's sightseeing!
As well as being a modern and relaxing place to stay, Ocean View has also been built to be virtually 100% energy efficient and is an especially great place to stay if you care about the environment. The cottage has it's very own windmill to generate electricity. When you arrive at Ocean View you'll find a vegetable patch full of fresh vegetables (depending on seasonal availability) - and we encourage you to help yourself!
If you have a four-legged friend, there's no need to leave them at home as Ocean View self catering cottage is pet friendly!
You won't be the only visitors to Ocean View though - we have two visitors every day - two hen harriers fly above the fields around the house almost daily at lunchtime!
As well as being the ideal base for an Orkney Holiday, Ocean View is also a great place to be at night. There's wireless broadband available and a TV with free satellite. As the cottage is in the countryside, you can enjoy beautiful dark skies - staying in Ocean View would be a dream come true for star-gazers! If you're really lucky, you may even get a great view of the Northern Lights away from any light polution. Finally, outside Ocean View, there's plenty of parking available and a big shed for storing any outdoor equipment you take with you.
We look forward to welcoming you to Ocean View and we are sure staying here will add to your amazing Orkney Holiday experience!

The Orkney Islands region
The islands of Orkney are mainly low lying—a gently rolling landscape of green fields, heather moorland heath and lochs (lakes). The underlying sandstone rock breaks-down easily to form good fertile soils and much of the landscape is farmed, growing mainly grass for animal feed. Most of the farmland is devoted to the production of beef cattle and Orkney beef is prized for its high quality. Sheep are also present in high numbers and the production of barley, potatoes (tatties) and turnips (neeps) is also common. The island of Hoy (meaning 'high' in Old Norse) is the exception with dramatic hills and valleys and spectacular cliffs.
The Orkney climate. Being surrounded by the sea has a huge influence on Orkney's weather and the relatively warm waters of the North Atlantic Drift (or Gulf Stream) which only varies by roughly 5 degrees throughout the year means our 'mean air temperature' fluctuates by less than 10 degrees from summer to winter. The climate is described as 'temperate' with relatively low rainfall and not a great deal of snow and ice in the winter months. The most noticeable feature about Orkney weather is the wind and given the open exposure to the Atlantic and North Seas this is understandable. It can be windy at any time of year but the calmest, sunniest spells tend to be in May, June, July as perhaps you'd expect. The strength and consistency of the wind has a huge effect on daily life in Orkney and is perhaps most noticeable in the construction of the buildings and lack of tall trees/vegetation.
The exploitation of this huge natural resource is evident throughout the county in the form of many small and large scale wind turbines. Wave and tidal power generation is emerging as a very real natural resource in which Orkney is leading the way in research and development

"Great stay calm and refreshing"
I really enjoyed our holiday in the. orkney the holiday cottage was clean and modern situated in the country with easy access from the owner how to get their. it was central to visiting all the history sights. The beds were comfortable and the goodies left by the owner was good. the only fault I would say is that they either put in a tumble dryer or more bath towels as sometimes the weather not great and not able to get towels dry. However that was the only problem would stay their again and recommend to my friends and family. would have liked to meet the owners

"Comfortable, stylish, pet-friendly, and very well equipped accomodation."
Ocean View proved a first-class property for myself, partner, and two 10-year olds. Very well equipped, very comfortable, stylish, clean, spacious accomodation. Everything worked perfectly, the rooms were very well decorated, and we wanted for nothing. The welcome hamper was a lovely touch - nice stuff, too! Cracking views, and be aware that it is well out in the country - just what we were looking for. The garden was great - we were blessed with stunning week of weather, so were using the BBQ and garden fully! The only quibble we all agreed on was that the side gate is wrongly placed. Ideally, we should have been able to leave the back door to the garden open, so that kids and the dog could move freely between the house and the. Having to open/close the gate every time you did so proved to be a real pain in the donkey!! Apart from that, a thoroughly enjoyable stay, and would recommend this for any family (with or without a dog) looking for comfortable, stylish, well-equipped accomodation out in the Orcadian countryside.

"An outstanding rental cottage in a beautiful location"
We travelled to Orkney for a family holiday in July. We were so pleasantly surprised by this lovely cottage, which was freshly decorated and accomodated for your every need, they also supplied us with some very special Orkney treats, cheese, oatcakes and wine, an very nice touch. We instantly felt very at home, the rooms were spacious, the freeview and wifi was also a real bonus.
The location was lovely, the veiws across the ocean on a good day were breathtaking, very close to many amenities, although a car is essential.
Would highly recommend this cottage to all. David & Susie were very helpful with all details required and directions to the cottage.
