The Basque Country/Navarre region

Nature at a stone's throw from civilisation: Wide plains, mountain massifs with magnificent routes, green woods, great cliffs, rich marshes and relaxing beaches. Nature lovers have a lot to discover in Euskadi. Its uneven landscapes' diversity and beauty is evident not only in the established natural parks, but in most of the territory.
The 7,200 km² of the Basque Autonomous Region present two main landscape types. On the one hand, a wide coastal strip, green, damp and mountainous, which includes Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and the North of Alava. On the other hand, Alava's southern wide and dry plains, which are a sign of the relief and weather characteristics of the Castilian Plateau. Among those extremes, Alava's plains act as a transition area.
Nowadays Euskadi consists of several protected natural spaces, where different projects for the recovery of flora and fauna take place. Natural parks: Urkiola, Gorbeia, Aralar, Valderejo, Izki and Aiako Harria; Urdaibai biosphere reserve and, finally, protected biotopes: Itxina, Laguardia, Leizaran and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Humid spaces with magic mountains and legendary potholes that allow the visitor to enjoy the charms of nature.
252 kms of coast: Apart from mountains and natural parks, the seaside is one of the main attractions of Euskadi, where steep cliffs alternate with river mouths, marshes and thin-sand beaches.
Most Basque beaches are perfectly equipped with services and offer the chance of practising many water sports such as windsurfing, sailing, surfing, canoeing and scuba diving.
The Bilbao / Sopelana area
About Sopelana
Sopelana's landscape is full of cliffs and wild beaches constituting one of the most striking stretches on the Bizkaia coast due to its natural richness and the beauty of its landscape. This quiet and cosy village is a real paradise for those who want to combine sports with leisure, as Sopelana is a perfect place to practice different activities such as surfing, bodyboarding, paragliding, climbing and routes by mountain bike.
But, without doubt, its four beaches are one of Sopelana's main attractions. Barinatxe, also known as La Salvaje, has heavy swell and attracts numerous surfers. On one side of the beach nudism is practised and every year this beach is home to an international nudist race, very popular in town. Arrietara Beach is one of the most frequented and Atxabiribil is encompassed by cliffs and open to the sea, whereas Meñakoz is perhaps the most solitary and difficult to access.
Leaving aside its four beaches, it is worth going for a walk along the path from Getxo to Sopelana among impressive cliffs where many practise sports such as paragliding and hang-gliding. On the way we will find interesting elements such as the windmill Aixerrota and the Faro de Punta Galea lighthouse. Green spots such as the Parque de Iturrieta park where the estanque De La Ballena pond is located also surround the way.
To its undeniable natural beauty we have to add some interesting cultural features too, such as the Renaissance style church of San Pedro (16th century) and its magnificent baroque tower, the Romanesque hermitage of San Andrés with seafaring details, country houses in the surroundings (interesting sample of popular architecture) and sculptures in the open air as the one dedicated to surfers. Likewise, it should be noted the presence of prehistoric settlements such as Kurtzio, one of the most ancient settlements in Bizkaia.
As for festivals, the main fiestas in Sopelana are San Pedro's, in June, festival of Carmen in July and San Andrés in November. We cannot forget the lively medieval fair in August which includes stands, circus exhibits, theatre performances, music...
About Bilbao
Bilbao is located in the mouth of the river Ibaizabal in the north of the historical territory of Bizkaia, surrounded by several mountains such as Pagasarri, Ganeta, Restaleku, Arnotegi, Artxanda and Santo Domingo. Apart from being the capital of Bizkaia, it is the most populated Basque city and the economic driving force of the Basque Autonomous Region, as well as a cultural reference point.
The city has undergone an important transformation for the last decades, thanks to new infrastructures -the underground: Metro Bilbao -, the restoration of many buildings, the port's enlargement, the creation of new green areas, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Euskalduna Convention Centre and the Maritime Museum, but still preserving its old the charm.
"Siete Calles"
The Old Town, better known as Siete Calles (Seven Streets), constitutes Bilbao's core and its main commercial and leisure area. It is a real delight to walk through its narrow streets studded with bars, restaurants and typical and modern shops.
In the nearby, the Arenal Bridge connects the Old Town with the 19th-century urban expansion area, that consists of elegant buildings and big blocks. Don Diego Lopez de Haro Street, commonly called as Gran Via, is the core of the enlargement. This elegant business and banking thoroughfare has now become a semi-pedestrian street. Bizkaia's capital is also a financial and service centre. The Bilbao Stock Exchange -an economic reference at State level-, and the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) -house of relevant international fairs, are two of its main economic features. On the other hand, the Port of Bilbao is the biggest and most important one in the Basque Country and one of the leading ports in Europe.
Cosy, plural and cosmopolitan city, Bilbao welcomes a growing number of visitors every year, especially during the Aste Nagusia (Big Week). Bilbao's main festival takes place in August. Mari Jaia, a big blonde figure built of papier mache, is the soul of the festival.
