Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 7
Dating from 1420, The Yeoman's House, listed Grade II*, is a superb example of a medieval hall house, probably the best preserved building of its type remaining in England. Set in about an acre of garden in the downland village of Bignor, within the South Downs National Park, the house has been fully modernised inside by its present owners, whilst retaining many original features, including fine timberwork throughout, vaulted ceilings upstairs and some charmingly uneven floors.
The Yeoman's House is spacious, comfortable and well equipped, offering accommodation for up to seven guests in three bedrooms. The large garden around the house is a delight with attractive planting schemes conceived by the owner, who is herself a garden designer.

About this location
The West Sussex region
The house provides a wonderful base for exploring this beautiful part of southern England; there are lovely walks straight from the door up to Bignor Hill and opportunities for all manner of outdoor activities – mountain biking, horse riding, golf and fishing as well as horse racing and polo at Goodwood and Cowdray Park. The historic towns of Petworth (numerous antique shops and Petworth House) and Arundel (ancient 12th century castle and River Arun cruises) are both less than 10 miles away, while a little further to the south are the cathedral city of Chichester and the West Sussex coastline stretching from Chichester's huge natural harbour (birdwatching, sailing, windsurfing and sandy beaches) across to Brighton, the south of England's most vibrant seaside town.
Bignor itself is a tiny hamlet; within the parish are the remains of a Roman villa with well preserved mosaics. Nearest shops are in Petworth, Arundel or Pulborough, which also has a 75 minutes rail link to London, and there's a good local pub 15 minutes' walk away in the next-door village of Sutton.
