The Devon region
Bigbury's most famous landmark is the iconic Burgh Island, which overlooks the beach itself. The Burgh Island Hotel was built in 1929, extended in 1932 and since 2006 has been completely restored to its 30's glamour. The beauty and intrigue of the island has drawn many famous visitors here including Edward and Mrs Simpson, The Beatles, Noel Coward and Agatha Christie who wrote two of her novels here. The island is accessible at low tide, when the waters reveal a causeway that links it to the beach. However even when the tide is in, you can still reach the island by hitching a ride with the infamous and popular Sea Tractor.
The early history of the island is unclear, however it is mentioned in early records and on maps as St Michael's Island. Later the name changed to Borough Island, eventually being corrupted to Burgh. As late as 1947 an Ordnance Survey map refers to the island as Borough Island. In 1908 a postcard produced by Stengel & Co Ltd of London referred to it as Burr Island. A map published in 1765 shows "Borough or Bur Isle".
It is believed a monastery was established on the island, most of the remains of which may lie beneath the current hotel. The ancient Pilchard Inn may have started life as the guest lodgings for the monastery.
A small, perhaps transient, population of fishermen occupied the island following the dissolution of the monastery, specialising in pilchard fishing. There are the remains of a chapel a-top the island, which was later became a "huers hut" - a place where fishermen would make a "hue and cry" call to inform other fishermen of shoals of pilchards. During this period smuggling, wrecking and piracy were common, benefiting from a natural barrier for half the day.
Fears of German landing forces using the island as a beachhead during World War II resulted in the area's fortification with anti-tank defences as well as two pill boxes, positioned on either side of the causeway. An observation post was also established on the summit to monitor the coastline.
Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Bigbury on Sea beach is ideal for family holidays. Dusted with sand and lapped by shallow waters, the beach offers safe fun for groups particularly if you've got children in tow. In addition, Bigbury on Sea beach is dotted with rock pools, so there's plenty of creepy-crawly entertainment for budding marine biologists. The beach is popular with families and there are a number of facilities and activities available if you're seeking a bit more excitement on your holiday.
Bigbury on Sea beach has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag in recognition of the beach's excellent standards, particularly its efforts to make the beach accessible to everyone. In addition to good disabled access, Bigbury on Sea beach also provides Beach Wheelchairs for those with mobility requirements.
There's a wide and varied selection of water sports available if you prefer more of an adrenaline rush. If you want to try something different from the usual bodyboarding or surfing then windsurfing and kite-surfing are gaining popularity here, with hire facilities located right on the beach.
To give you some peace of mind, there are lifeguards present at Bigbury on Sea beach during May to September and the beach also has a first-aid room.
The beach has good facilities including a café that specialises in selling organic and local food. Its 'surf 'n' turf is one of the best in the area and makes good use of locally sourced ingredients to create a delicious platter that everyone will enjoy.

"A stunning apartment in a beautiful location"
This apartment takes your breath away from the moment you arrive. The views of Burgh Island and the beach are absolutely spectacular. The apartment is pristine with an interior that is incredibly stylish and luxurious yet, so comfortable with everything you could possibly need for the perfect break away. So much attention to detail has gone into this apartment including gorgeous lights, artwork, furniture, wonderful towels and very snuggly duvets. There was tea, cookies and even pre-stamped postcards to send home! The complex has an indoor pool and Jacuzzi which were impressive both during the day and at night when all lit up. The onsite coffee shop / bar is a great place to share a drink with friends and the staff there were very welcoming and helpful. We had a delicious curry at the Pilchard Inn on one evening which has stood since the 1300’s. On the Saturday we had a very unusual but entertaining black tie dinner over on Burgh Island at the unique hotel which is steeped in history and mystery and an experience I would thoroughly recommend. There are lots of walks along the coastal paths around this apartment and the beach being so close is just fantastic. I had a wonderful weekend here with friends but it felt like longer because it was so relaxing. I would definitely love to return and can’t speak highly enough of apartment number 16!
Thank you so much for such a detailed review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and had a relaxing weekend. I look forward to welcoming you back again

Just spent a weekend at the apartment, what a place! The accommodation is better than in the 5* hotel, attention to detail is superb, bedding and beds are super comfortable, the whole place oozes style and quality! The view from the window is simply mesmerising. We had a great weekend and I would highly recommend this apartment to my friends and family.

"The perfect apartment and location"
We have spent a fair amount of time over the years visiting Devon and the South Hams area and we are always searching for the best accomodation that we want to return to time and time again and 16 burgh island my just be it! This apartment is very well decorated with the highest quality of furnishings and fittings and the placement and view from these apartments is just spectacular. Right on the beach, the tide comes and goes twice a day, which means the view is constantly changing and you will no doubt loose many hours to just sitting at the window seat or on the balcony watching the tide and the sea tractor come and go to the island. The apartment has everything you will need and some and it takes some beating.
Thank you so much Michelle for your wonderful feedback! It is appreciated and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Best wishes

"Luxury by the sea with a view to die for"
"From the moment we set foot in number 16 we knew we had made a fantastic choice! The apartment well deserves its five star status, with beautiful decor, a kitchen to die for, two exquisite en suite bedrooms and stunning views of Burgh Island. A real touch of luxury by the seaside. Thoughtful extras such as a huge selection of beach kit and games to use during our stay, a little gift for our three year old daughter on her bed and the lovely complementary biscuits and bowl of fruit were the icing on the cake. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend number 16 for anyone looking for a touch of luxury by the seaside."
Thank you so much for your lovely comments - we truly appreciate them. We strive to ensure our guests have a memorable holiday with us and we hope to welcome you back again. Kind regards to you and your family.
