20 yards from Bigbury-on-Sea's big and splendid sandy beach, and looking at Burgh Island over the low-tide sandy causeway, is this truly excellent and very greatly appreciated development of 29 high quality apartments of which we let 13, and, within the building, a very good private Leisure Club. The views over the sea to the south and west, and at low tide of a huge expanse of smooth washed yellow sand reaching to Burgh Island, are outstanding. The island's jolly pub, The Pilchard, is fun to visit (long-legged sea tractor at high tide).

All the apartments have those sensational views, are double-glazed, marvellously light, with large living/dining/fitted kitchens, glazed doors to balconies or terraces. They are privately owned and individually furnished. Smallish bedrooms at the back (no views) with good quality en suite, internal, tiled bath or shower-rooms. Most have easy access (short walk from the car and between 5 and 9 steps down to the lift). Parking for one car at the back of each property and some extra space for guests. Arrival after 4pm.

The Leisure Club, open from 10am every day (closed Christmas Day; open from 11am to 3pm on Boxing Day and from 12pm to 4pm on New Year's Day), has a fine indoor kidney-shaped swimming pool (40' x 20' x 4'6"), spa pool, extensive, well-equipped gym (treadmill, steps, cycles, Concept II Rower, and other instruments of torture) and sauna (no children under 14 in gym or sauna). The smart bar provides coffee/drinks through the day and light meals, cream teas and a children's menu (variable opening hours), served either in the Club or for you to take to your apartment. Comfy lounging area (sofas, WiFi broadband) and outside terrace facing the sea. There are changing rooms, a shower and disabled loo.

Prices include everything - linen, towels, heating, electricity and use of the Leisure Club facilities from 10am.The building is three-storey. The ground floor (but still high above the beach) apartments have big terraces, the first floor apartments have very good-sized balconies, the top ones have smaller balconies (room for four people to sit comfortably though).

No 8. Exceptional - the best site of all. The ground-floor corner apartment with a double aspect terrace three times the size of all other ground floor terraces; superb views, table/chairs, loungers, gas barbecue. Inside, hardwood floors (rugs) in living areas; carpeted bedrooms. Furnished in oak; decorated in neutral colours and contemporary coloured fabrics, seaside themes. Good-sized living/dining room (sofa bed, TV/DVD) and slightly recessed Shaker kitchen (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, fridge-freezer); glazed doors to terrace. Two bedrooms, both with sea views ' double (5' bed) plus single bed with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower), twin with en suite shower-room (power-shower, suite). Best for maximum of 4 adults.

The Devon region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Bigbury-on-Sea

Bigbury-on-Sea: village (PO/shop) with south Devon's biggest sandy beaches (The Venus Café, Takeaway and Surf School, seasonal beach shop), stretching to Burgh Island (The Pilchard pub; famous art deco hotel - you can walk to it at low tide, go by long-legged tractor at high). Good windsurfing; fine cliffs for walking and sea-bird watching. Golf, 1 mile. Kingsbridge, 10 miles; Salcombe, 15.
