L162 - Cobbles Point
Cottage | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
In Bigbury-on-Sea, 700 yards up from the magnificent beach and with sensational panoramic views, a very large, attached cottage, one of six converted from huge stone barns. Its end-of-row, seaward-facing position and split-level foundations make it very private with those views from most rooms; from two raised decks (table/chairs, barbecue) at the front, views are uninterrupted for almost 180 degrees from the Avon estuary, over Bantham and out to sea. Below the decks (steps down), at the front and side, a good-sized, lawned and gravelled, enclosed garden, with another little enclosed, lawned area sheltered by a high hedge at the back.Inside, exceptionally roomy with high, apex ceilings and exposed beams, made homely and comfortable with cottage-style furnishings and fabrics. Stable doors to ground-floor oak-fitted kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, cooker with induction hob, iPod dock) with tiled floor; utility area (washer-drier) with loo (washbasin) and steps down to double bedroom (5' bed) with en suite shower cubicle and bidet, sea views and doors to garden. From the kitchen, steps up to big, lofty living room (woodburner, TV/DVD) with oak floor (rug) and French windows to deck; also at this level, another double bedroom (TV/DVD, great sea views) with step up to en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower) and doors to garden. Two more good-sized bedrooms – one with two singles, and a twin (zip-linkable to 6' double) with doors to garden. Bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). A relaxing, family-friendly home with hard-to-beat views; minutes from the coast path and a choice of superb beaches.

The West Country region
The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.
Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.
Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.
Bigbury-on-Sea: village (PO/shop) with south Devon's biggest sandy beaches (The Venus Café, Takeaway and Surf School, seasonal beach shop), stretching to Burgh Island (The Pilchard pub; famous art deco hotel - you can walk to it at low tide, go by long-legged tractor at high). Good windsurfing; fine cliffs for walking and sea-bird watching. Golf, 1 mile. Kingsbridge, 10 miles; Salcombe, 15.
