' in Bigbury-on-Sea, just 200 yards up from the magnificent sandy beach, a huge, split-level, detached house, facing south with the most sensational panoramic views over the bay to Burgh Island and the coastline beyond. With a stunning contemporary design, every thought has gone into making this recently built seaside home stylish and superbly comfortable, whilst the very latest green technology makes it possible to leave the smallest of footprints on this beautiful environment. Interiors are light, spacious, bright, everything generous and well done with good fabrics, relaxing colour schemes and oak or tiled floors throughout. On the seaward side, a big, enclosed, lawned garden with little summer house (seating 4, best for children), paved suntrap patio (table/benches, barbecue), an elevated terrace (table/chairs, barbecue) and a 6-person hot tub, all ideally positioned to while away lazy days or balmy evenings enjoying the captivating coastal views and fabulous sunsets. You get to 'live the view' inside too, with big floor-to-ceiling windows on all three levels. Large paved forecourt (high, lockable gates to garden, garage with space for one car plus watersports/beach gear) with short slope down to front door to entrance hall; huge light-filled kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, fridge-freezer, combi-microwave) with glossy white units, shiny granite worktops, central island (halogen hob) and dining area with arch (sliding door for winter cosiness) through to fabulous living room (TV/DVD/Blu-ray/PVR, iPod dock, woodburner); to show off the ever-changing 180 degree views and make the most of indoor/outdoor living, both rooms have sliding walls of glass and access to the deck, from which steps lead down to the garden and hot tub. Also on this level, large study/second living room (TV/DVD, Wii), serving as a bedroom when required with one sofa converting to double bed (clothes-hanging space in hall); loo (washbasin), utility room (washing machine, tumble drier, freezer, side door to garden)and door to garage.Open tread oak stairs down to lower ground floor and four large en suite bedrooms ' the enormous master double (6' bed, TV) and a stylish twin (zip-linkable to 6' double), both with en suite bathroom (suite plus separate shower with hand-shower attachments, one with twin washbasins, one with bath-shower) and facing the sea (views) with big sliding glazed doors to the garden; two further very smart twins, one (zip-linkable to 6' double) with en suite shower-room (suite), the other with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower and hand-shower). From hall, more open tread stairs up to impressive second master double (6' bed, TV/DVD) with walk-in dressing/cot room and en suite bathroom (suite plus separate shower with hand-shower attachments, twin washbasins) and huge views from floor-to-ceiling windows (door to small balcony). Local caterers can be recommended. The Devon region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Bigbury-on-Sea

Bigbury-on-Sea: village (PO/shop) with south Devon's biggest sandy beaches (The Venus Café, Takeaway and Surf School, seasonal beach shop), stretching to Burgh Island (The Pilchard pub; famous art deco hotel - you can walk to it at low tide, go by long-legged tractor at high). Good windsurfing; fine cliffs for walking and sea-bird watching. Golf, 1 mile. Kingsbridge, 10 miles; Salcombe, 15.
