The Devon region
Whether you're looking for a relaxing break or action packed adventure, South Devon is full of activities and attractions.
For a relaxing beach holiday South Devon beaches are hard to beat. Many of the beaches have awards for water and beach quality, and much of the coastline is under the protection of an AONB (area of outstanding natural beauty) or the National Trust. There are miles of safe award winning beaches for families.
Those looking for a more relaxing break South Devon boasts an array of local arts and crafts to capture your imagination, as well as the opportunity to wander around historic buildings, museums and award winning gardens.
Keep the children entertained with a host of Family Attractions whatever the weather- go wild at the zoo, paint pottery, ride a rollercoaster or have a great family day out at one of South Devon's top attractions; Woodlands Theme Park.
South Devon's historic market towns offer the opportunity to browse markets and taste local food and drinks. The local area has many varied towns and villages worth a visit. A few are mentioned below:
Modbury, an attractive and busy Georgian town, and is well worth a visit with its interesting local shops.
With all the hustle and bustle of a traditional market town a visit to Kingsbridge is a must. Kingsbridge, situated at the head of the Salcombe Estuary is the closest town that has a petrol station, banks and a chemist. Tesco and Morrisons supermarkets can also be found in Kingsbridge. Ferries operate on a daily basis between Kingsbridge and Salcombe.
Salcombe, some 10 miles away is renowned for sailing, or enjoying a leisurely ferry trip. A walk through Salcombe with an ice-cream in hand is a lovely way to while away a relaxing afternoon.
The interesting naval city of Plymouth with the National Aquarium is only 19 miles away.
For those looking to be more energetic there is plenty to do. If you love the outdoors why not try your hand at a new activity such as sailing, golf, horse riding, walking, cycling, canoeing or rock climbing to name a few!
Bigbury Village is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, is ideal for family holidays. Dusted with sand and lapped by shallow waters, it offers safe fun for groups particularly if you've got children in tow. In addition, Bigbury beach is dotted with rock pools, so there's plenty of creepy-crawly entertainment for budding marine biologists. While this beach is popular with families, there are a number of facilities and activities available if you're seeking a bit more excitement on your holiday.
There's a varied selection of water sports available to visitors who prefer their holidays to feature a little adrenaline rush. If you want to try something different from the usual bodyboarding or surfing then windsurfing and kite-surfing are gaining popularity here, with hire facilities located right on the beach.
To give you some peace of mind, there are lifeguards present at Bigbury beach during May to September and the beach also has a first-aid room. You can even take your dog onto Bigbury beach, although they are restricted to certain areas during the summer. Bigbury beach is one of the main attractions about holidaying in Bigbury.
Bigbury-on-Sea hosts the fascinating Burgh Island with its 14th century pub, accessible only at low tide or by sea tractor at high tide.
Bigbury Golf Course with its breathtaking views of Bigbury Bay and the River Avon is 1 mile from the cottage. The fairways are wide and the greens fast, but club selection is complicated by sea winds and by well placed trees and bunkers. Visitors are welcome at Bigbury Golf Course.
The cottage is situated in Bigbury village with its village shop and pub/restaurant is only a walk away. Kingsbridge, a sizeable town and the capital of the South Hams region is 6 miles from the cottage. The closest beach is less than 2 miles away at Bigbury-on-Sea.
