In Bigbury-on-Sea, 200 yards up from the vast sandy beach and with L153 and L188 as neighbours (same owners), a smart, detached, single-storey house with superb panoramic views over Bigbury Bay and Burgh Island. A large sea-facing paved terrace, brilliant for enjoying those timewasting views, refreshing sea breezes and stunning sunsets and lawn; below, another good-sized lawn and shed for surfboards/beach gear etc. Inside, revamped from top to toe with a fresh seaside theme, fun fabrics, oak or tiled floors (rugs) throughout. From gently sloping drive, level path and 2 steps up to terrace (alternative entrance via gentle slope with handrail down from rear gate to back lane) to door to hall; bright open-plan kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, fridge-freezer, microwave, iPod dock) with big glazed doors to terrace (table/chairs, barbecue, steps down to drive and shed). Living room (TV/DVD/Blu-ray/PVR, woodburner, sofa bed for alternative sleeping) opening to sunroom (sofas/chairs, high glass ceilings) with those superb sea views and more glazed doors to terrace. Three smart bedrooms – a double (low 5' bed, TV/DVD) and a twin, each with en suite shower-room (suite), and a smallish double (5' bed, limited space around the bed) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower and hand-shower). Cloakroom (loo, washbasin); utility room (washer-drier, sink). A stunning spot with outstanding views.

The West Country region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Bigbury-on-Sea

Bigbury-on-Sea: village (PO/shop) with south Devon's biggest sandy beaches (The Venus Café, Takeaway and Surf School, seasonal beach shop), stretching to Burgh Island (The Pilchard pub; famous art deco hotel - you can walk to it at low tide, go by long-legged tractor at high). Good windsurfing; fine cliffs for walking and sea-bird watching. Golf, 1 mile. Kingsbridge, 10 miles; Salcombe, 15.
