Home description
Snow Pines is located in the small quiet community of "Big Trees" in the SIerra Nevada range of Northern California, with proximity to clear mountain streams and tens of thousands of acres of largely uninhabited redwood & pine covered mountains. Restaurants, shops and a supermarket are however only 15 minutes drive down the mountain to Arnold, "gateway to the Sierras" a mountain community of around 4000. The mountain home is located In a beautiful year round resort area popular with active families who love the outdoors. The area enjoys endless sunny days around 27c (79F) in the summer months and potentially several meters of snow in the winter! The main road Highway 4 leading to Ebbetts Pass, is however well maintained up to Bear Valley ski resort all year, (approx 18 mile passed Snow PInes). Snowmobiles can be rented in Bear Valley to ride further up highway 4 in winter - a trip not to be missed! Snow Pines is in a very quiet elevated position on 3 levels, including a loft, and enjoys electric heating and a wood burning stove for those winter days and nights. An ample wood supply is included. While there are neighbours, it is not unusual to see only a handful of cars passing all day ! This location will appeal to adventurous families and couples looking for something different. Access is good with any rental car except in winter, when a 4 wheel drive and/or snow chains are recommended.

The California region
Eastward, beyond the surf of the Pacific, beyond the tawny rolling Coast Range and the wide central valley of California, rises the great wall of the Sierra Nevada. Four hundred miles long, seventy-five miles wide, ten to more than fourteen thousand feet in height, it ranks with the major mountain ranges of the world. Certainly it is one of the most beautiful. Geologically, it is a titled block of the earth's crust -- a long, continuous slope fronting the west, and a short, breath-taking decline to the eastern deserts. --The Sierra Nevada as described by by Philip Greenspun Truly the "Range of Light," as John Muir defined it, the Sierra Nevada rises to the sun as a vast shining world of stone and snow and foaming waters, mellowed by the forests growing upon it and the clouds and storms that flow over it. -- Ansel Adams, 1938, in the foreword to Sierra Nevada: The John Muir Trail (quoted in the Sierra chapter of his autobiography )
