The West Country / Devon region
North Devon enjoys a stunning coastline lined with picturesque villages and towns. Generally more tranquil than the tourist honey-pots of Cornwall and South Devon, here there are hidden coves to discover and unspoilt beaches and countryside to explore.
Bideford area
Along North Devon’s stunning coastline you will discover an area steeped in a tradition of smuggling and famous for fishing villages such as Clovelly. Just 5 miles away from your lodge, walk the steep cobbles of Clovelly, passing flower bedecked cottages down to its 14th century fishing harbour. Local beaches and coves include Sandymouth Bay; Duck Pool and Bucks Mill. Other beaches in the locality include Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands and Braunton.
Beaches at the nearby attractive seaside town of Bude include Summerleaze, Widemouth Bay, Northcott Mouth and Crooklets - some offering British Surfing Association approved tuition. Woolacombe, Croyde and Padstow are also within easy reach. For watersports, visit Tamar Lakes where you can sail, windsurf and canoe as well as hire rowing boats. Coarse fishing can be had at the Upper Tamar Lake and various reservoirs as well as at Hartland Parc itself.
A number of local stables offer horse riding along the coastal paths or cross country while the Tarka Trail is a splendid bike route. As well as Hartland Parc’s own golf course, other nearby courses include Bude (Links), Holsworthy, Royal North Devon (Links), Great Torrington and Saunton (Links).
The world famous Eden Project is around an hour’s drive away but for closer gardens and historic houses visit Hartland Abbey (built in the 12th century), Tapeley House and Gardens, Rosemoor Gardens (RHS), Marwood Gardens and the National Trust’s Arlington Court. Local nature reserves and country parks include Braunton Burrows (one of Europe's largest areas of sand dunes), Kenwith Valley Nature Reserve and Tamar Lakes which has a wildfowl refuge.
There are many local potteries and craft studios to be found in surrounding villages and the Burton Art Gallery at Bideford exhibits a variety of local works. For children there are a number of local adventure parks including the Milky Way and the Big Sheep. There is a Pirate Ship play area at Atlantic Village and go-karting at Kilarney Springs.
The choice and variety of walks here is outstanding. There are many fantastic stretches of the Southwest Coastal Path to stretch your legs on while Exmoor, Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor are also on your doorstep. Don’t forget to round off your day with a delicious cream tea!
