The West Country / Devon region

Hartland Forest covers 1000 acres and is home to herds of wild deer, yet is just 8 miles away from North Devon's beautiful Heritage coastline and miles of sandy beaches.

Hartland Forest Golf & Leisure Parc is situated within Hartland Forest , close to the Atlantic coast of North Devon which is steeped in a tradition of smuggling and wrecking , and famous for its timeless fishing villages , including Hartland and Clovelly which are just 5 miles away . Renowned the world over for its flower strewn cottages and steep cobbled footpath falling to the 14th century harbour , Clovelly should not be missed by visitors to Devon whilst Hartland Quay and its incredible geological features and beauty so impressed Walt Disney that it formed the backdrop to the opening of his film of Robert Louis Stevenson's ' Treasure Island ' .

Lundy Island can be visited by boat from Clovelly or Bideford Quay and is populated by just a few souls , many seals and puffins .

For garden and historic house enthusiasts , a visit to Hartland Abbey , Tapeley House and Gardens , Arlington Court , RHS Rosemoor Gardens and Marwood Gardens would be worthwhile .

The Atlantic ( Factory Shopping ) Village on the outskirts of Bideford offers ' Retail Therapy ' and Dartington Crystal at Torrington is well worth a visit .

The Burton Art Gallery at Bideford exhibits a variety of local works and also varied touring shows

There are many local potteries and craft studios to be found in surrounding villages.

Just a short drive along the Cornish coast are Tintagel , Boscatle , Crackington Haven , Polzeath , Port Isaac ( where ' Doc Martin ' is filmed ) , Rock and Padstow . ( The latter notable for its association with Rick Stein's eateries and as a former home to Sir Walter Raleigh - not necessarily in that order ! ) .

The whole of the Devon and Cornwall coastline is easily accessible from the lodge and offers unsurpassed holiday attractions for adults and children alike , throughout the year .

Bideford / Hartland Forest Golf and Leisure Parc area

There are many local beaches and coves including Sandymouth Bay , Duck Pool , Bucks Mill , Bude , Northcott Mouth , Crooklets , Summerleaze and Widemouth Bay , Westward Ho! , Instow , Braunton and Saunton Sands.

Surfing is a popular pastime at many local beaches - British Surfing Association approved tuition is available at Bude.

At the Tamar Lakes there is a watersports centre offering sailing , windsurfing and canoeing . Rowing boats are also available for hire.

Sea shore fishing is accessible from many places including Clovelly , Hartland Quay and Appledore and sea fishing trips go out from Clovelly .

Coarse fishing locations include the Upper Tamar Lake , Jennetts , Melbury and Darracott reservoirs and trout fishing is available at Roadford and Colliford Lakes.

Wreck diving is available off Lundy.

A number of local stables offer horse riding along the coastal paths or cross country.

The Tarka Trail is a wonderful bike riding route and there are many local lanes to explore too .

Other nearby golf courses include Bude ( Links ) , Holsworthy , Royal North Devon ( Links ) , Great Torrington , Libbaton , Highbullen and Saunton ( Links ) .

There are many breathtaking walks including stretches of the Southwest Coastal Path , Tarka Country , Exmoor , Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor together with local country and woodland paths . A few local favourites are Bucks Mill , Broad Parkham , Peppercombe , Clovelly , Mouth Mill , Brownsham , Hartland Quay , Stoke , Hartland Point , and Bude's canal and cliffs.

Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the many local nature reserves and country parks which include Northam Burrows , Braunton Burrows , one of Europe's largest areas of sand dunes with important plants , Kenwith Valley Nature Reserve , Tamar Lakes ( the lower lake is an S.S.S.I. and a wildfowl refuge ) , Isley Marsh near Instow - 97 acres on the Taw estuary , Brownsham near Hartland ( also S.S.S.I ) , Halsdon near Dolton - ( S.S.S.I again ! ) , Welcombe and Marsland , Bucks and Keivills Wood and Lundy Island - 11 miles off the coast and which is owned by the National Trust .

Guestbook for Three Bears' Lodge

Hi David ,

Many thanks for the wine - it was just what we needed after a long journey .

We had a smashing time, accommodation was first class. Found the play area which Chloe loved. At one time we had 22 ducks around, there were two that were always together, and in the mornings they would peck on the window, obviously waiting to be fed, the others always stayed on the grass the other side of the decking. We were fortunate enough to see a baby fox (twice) on the little road from the lodge to the main road.

Weather wasn't very good, but we found plenty of things to keep us occupied even with the different age groups, Steve and I would like to go back some time and do a few walks around the area.

Best Wishes , Carole .

David ,

Thank you for your note.

The lodge was in a lovely location. It was just as described and you seem to think of everything. It was really clean and had everything we needed especially the champagne ! - that was a nice touch .

Thanks again and if we come back to your part of Devon I'm sure we will come back to you and I will certainly be recommending your lodge to our friends .

Angie

David

We throughly enjoyed the lodge! It was perfect for our needs and one of the best examples of holiday accommodation we've ever stayed in. Our friends were more than happy with the cot and highchair . We will be recommending the lodge to anyone we know.

Thanks
