The West Country region
Close to the Atlantic coastline with the Bristol Channel to the north the area is one of outstanding beauty. Don't miss the village of Clovelly, about 15 minutes drive away, with its steep cobbled paths and 'roads' leading to the 14th century natural harbour.
All along this coastline from the coastal pathway you will see waterfalls tumbling onto rocky shores. In the valleys, lichens and wild flowers grow and there are many wild birds and other animals especially during spring and summer.
The geological features around Hartland Quay are very impressive, a visit to the lighthouse at Hartland Point is a must to see one of the many partially submerged wrecks on the rocks. Local beaches and coves amongst others to visit include Sandymouth Bay, Duck Pool, Bucks Mill, Bude, Northcott Mouth, Crooklets, Summerleaze and Widemouth Bay, Westward Ho!, Instow, Braunton and Saunton Sands.
Surfing is a popular pastime at many of these beaches - British Surfing Association approved tuition is available at Bude.
At the Tamar Lakes there is a watersports centre offering sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. Rowing boats are also available for hire.
Sea shore fishing is accessible from Clovelly, Hartland Quay and Appledore and sea fishing trips go out from Clovelly.
Coarse fishing locations in addition to the free private lakes adjacent to Hartland Forest site include the Upper Tamar Lake, Jennetts, Melbury and Darracott reservoirs and trout fishing is available at Roadford and Colliford Lakes.
Catch the Oldenburg from Clovelly or Bideford Quay to visit Lundy island, owned by the National Trust. Spend the day walking on the many tracks and footpaths observing the marine birds especially puffins, also seals and possibly basking sharks offshore.
For those who enjoy visiting historic houses and gardens a visit to Hartland Abbey, Tapley House, Arlington Court, RHS Rosemoor Gardens and Marwood Gardens are all within easy reach. A longer journey will enable you to visit The Lost Gardens of Heligan or the Eden Project, both near St Austell.
If you are in need of 'retail therapy' the Atlantic Village just this side of Bideford has many factory outlets as well as a larger ASDA store.
Artists will enjoy the Burton Art Gallery at Bideford. There are also a number of craft studios and local potteries in the villages around.
Some local stables offer horse riding along the coastal paths or cross country.
The Tarka Trail is a wonderful bike riding route and there are many local lanes to explore too.
Nearby golf courses include Bude ( Links ), Holsworthy, Royal North Devon ( Links ), Great Torrington, Libbaton, Highbullen and Saunton ( Links ).
There are many breathtaking walks including stretches of the Southwest Coastal Path, Tarka Country, Exmoor, Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor together with local country and woodland paths . A few local favourites are Bucks Mill, Broad Parkham, Peppercombe, Clovelly, Mouth Mill, Brownsham, Hartland Quay, Stoke, Hartland Point, and Bude's canal and cliffs.
Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy local nature reserves and country parks which include Northam Burrows, Braunton Burrows, one of Europe's largest areas of sand dunes with important plants, Kenwith Valley Nature Reserve, Tamar Lakes ( the lower lake is an S.S.S.I. and a wildfowl refuge ), Isley Marsh near Instow - 97 acres on the Taw estuary , Brownsham near Hartland ( also S.S.S.I ), Halsdon near Dolton - ( S.S.S.I again ! ), Welcombe and Marsland, Bucks and Keivills Wood and Lundy Island - 11 miles off the coast and which is owned by the National Trust.
For the enjoyment of local hospitality and real ales in historic surroundings, all within a few miles of the lodge, here are a few suggestions:

"Fantastic lodge. Photos don't do it justice."
Stayed here for the Easter weekend with friends and it was fantastic. As one of the previous reviewers mentions; the photos really don't do it justice. The area with the sofas is a little small, but the photos don't show the dining table next to the open plan kitchen area, where we spent most of our time (eating - as you do on holiday!). The whole lodge was lovely. Spacious and warm, with a really well equipped (and modern) kitchen. It's relatively far away from local shops, etc. but we were happy to travel around, see the local area, and visit a few places we hadn't been for a while. Would definitely stay again, and couldn't recommend it highly enough.

"Lovely Spacious lodge in peaceful surroundings"
We stayed in the lodge for 1 week in july 2012 and had a very peaceful and enjoyable holiday.
The Lodge is spacious, clean and well equipped. We particularly appreciated the ensuite bathroom for the main bedroom which was nice to have while holidaying with two teenagers !
Also the fantastic south facing decking and pleasant furniture which we used for every meal.
There are no separate facilities close by , but we would not hesitate in recommending this property if a relaxing holiday is what your looking for.
Many thanks Andrew for letting us use your lovely property
