The Tasmania region
Tasmania's East Coast is a magnificent series of bays and beaches. At the halfway point is the awe-inspiring Great Oyster Bay, protected on the ocean side by Maria and Schouten Islands and rimmed by the Nine Mile Beach Coastal Reserve. Swimming, boating and fishing in what is said to be the world's cleanest water is just the beginning. The Freycinet National Park on the northern side of the Bay offers wonderful bushwalks, complete with exotic birds and tame wallabies, and some of the most sensational views in the world, including the famed Wineglass Bay.
The Fereycinet is accessible by car and foot and can also be explored from the sea with organised excursions, as can Maria Island. The area is famed for its seafood, including what many claim to be the best oysters in the world. It is also increasingly known for its cold climate wines and numerous wineries offer cellar door wine tasting with views to match the wines.
Imagine the iconic picture of yourself and your partner as the only people on the beach in an idyllic setting on a perfect day. This is the norm on Tasmania's central east coast. The short distances belie the peace and privacy available. The climate is equivalent to Europe and the exotic comes complete with the kinds of luxuries (fresh local produce, outstanding wines and seafood) which make for the perfect holiday.
Dolphin Sands is the longest sand spit in Tasmania consisting mainly of the Nine Mile Beach Coastal Reserve separating the pristine and majestic Great Oyster Bay from Moulting Lagoon with just one point of connection at the far northern end. Here the Swan River makes the road a dead end, ensuring the area remains totally peaceful.
However, a relatively short detour makes the area the gateway to the magnificent Freycinet Peninsula and national park, with its limitless bushwalks, fascinating range of wildlife and spectacular destinations such as Wineglass Bay. Boating, swimming and fishing are popular in the area, while boating excursions offer the chance to explore the area from the water. While the main attractions are the sensational views and outdoor activities, Swansea is just minutes away, offering all amenities, including a range of excellent restaurants. The area is equidistant between Hobart and Launceston, a comfortable 90 minute car trip from either airport.
