The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Pyrenees Atlantiques region
The Pyrénées Atlantiques department of France is split into the Pays Basque and the Béarn. Both areas hold on to their stronge traditions and there is a definite style of architecture for each area. White-washed houses with red or green shutters in the Pays Basque and high-pitched stone houses in the Béarn.
This is an area of France which has its own micro-climate. The winters are particularly mild, rarely dropping below 6°c. Summers can be hot but they rarely rise above 35°c and there is always a cooler breeze on the coast. The summers are not arid so this region is filled with lush vegetation - palm and banana trees, magnolia and camelias.
The Spanish influence means that local produce have a hint of "piment" with a great variety of local seafood, spicy sausages and local Basque dishes. The nearby department of the Landes offers endless acres of pine forest for walking and cycling and also vast expanses of untouched sand dunes, a contrast to the rugged Basque coast with its coves.
There really is something for everyone down here. Once you have discovered the delights of the Basque country, its beaches and mountains, the Landes with its pine forests and the Béarn with its salmon fishing and white water rafting, you can pop over to Spain and discover the beautiful, unpoilt coastline of Galicia and San Sebastien.
Biarritz area
Biarritz is the surfing capital of Europe offering world class waves and all that goes with it. There are surf shops in abundance in every town and surf schools dotted along the coast.
Nearby Bayonne nestled between two rivers has plenty of character with its narrow streets and terraced buildings. The Bayonne festival at the beginning of August must not be missed. The customary red and white outfit is compulsory and available to buy in just about every shop a few weeks before the event!!
In the Pays basque in particular each village throughout the summer months holds its own festival! Traditions are a very important part of everyday life here and as you visit the area from May, every weekend has a festival in one of the many pretty villages.
Further down the coast is the lovely fishing town of St Jean de Luz, packed with character. The place to eat freshly grilled sardines or tuna.
And just beyond lies Spain where a visit to San Sebastien and its shell-shaped bay must not be missed. The locals cross the border for tapas and sangria on a regular basis.
Activities are endless here with everything for the sporty tourist but for those who like to visit local museums and cultural events, there is a choice over the summer months.
