Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
Cers is a small quiet village between Beziers and the Mediterranean Sea in the Western Herault, an area known as Cathar country steeped in history from the Greek and Roman periods as well as during its turbulent periods during the Midde ages. Beziers is also known as the wine capital of the Languedoc Roussillon with close by the famous wine regions of St Chinian, Faugeres and Minervois with some great wines and beautiful countryside, and the mountains of the Pyrenees just a short drive away.
The Canal du Midi is literally a short walk from the villa and also within cycling distance. The long sandy beaches of the Mediterranean offer a wide choice of activities, from just relaxing to surfing or sailing, as well of course as lots of opportunities for dining on the beach in the different beach resorts, as well as the wide choice of restaurants available locally, including a good local restaurant within Cers, just a 5 minute walk away.
Pezenas offers a large range of shops in its historic cobbled streets, being the home town of Moliere, the French equivalent of Shakespeare. A large Saturday market in the main street every Saturday makes it well worth a visit.
Also within an hours drive is Carcassone and its walled city, Perpigan with its historic Catalan culture at the foot of the Pyrennees mountains and the regions capital, Montpellier a thriving young university city. The Pont du Gard, the roman aqueduct is within two hours drive, as is St Guilehelm le Dessert, the old Knights Templar town in the foothills of the Languedoc mountains that act as a backdrop to the rolling hills of vineyeards, inland from the Mediterranean.
The Beziers / Cers area
Cers is a wine village on the outskirts of Beziers, situated between Beziers and the coast. The village itself has all local shops, a weekly market and a number of local fetes throughout the year. The Canal du Midi is on the doorstep and it is possible to hire boats at the restaurant on the Canal, within a five minute walk. Beziers is well known for the Feria in August around the 15th which goes on for 5 days, including flamenco dancing, bull fights and street parties and parades -it becomes a real centre of attraction in the South of France. There are also of course many other events such as the music festivals, the traditional Friday flower market when the town centre becomes a sea of flowers, as well of course of the celebrations around the 14th July, Bastille Day.
There are a number of beaches within a 10 minute drive, the nearest and one of the best is Portiragnes plage. Serignan plage is also just 10 minuts away and in the summer months has an excellent if slightly expensive beach restaurant, a great place to eat in the evenings in particular with live music often at weekends. Valras Plage has a summer of events with many live shows for adults as well as children at the Theatre de la Mer, an open air theatre situated next to the beach and harbour. These take place from May until September. The beach is just a 10 minute drive from 'Le Coin Vert' and has ideal bathing for children with its sandy beaches and play areas. There are many restaurants and a lovely marina/harbour area to explore.
The village also provides three bakers, a restaurant, a bar, butchers, chemists, medical centre, paper shop, grocers and of course the local wine cooperative where the local wine is produced and can be purchased. There is also a large supermarket at the outskirts of the village where most items can be purchased and for an even larger shop a Carrefour is at the main roundabout going towards Beziers, a two minute drive away. Beziers itself has a number of commercial shopping centres on the outskirts with large Hypermarkets and a good selection of boutiques, cafes and restaurants in the historical town centre around the Allees Paul Riquet, which hosts a flower market every Friday.
Within a few hours drive are a number of attractions, Carcassone with its medieval fortifications and a world heritage site, the Knights Templar Village of St Guilhelm le Desert, the first time I visited admittedly some years ago it was only accessible on foot or mule being some distance from a main road but it has kept its charm, or of course Millau with its now world famous road bridge - the highest in the world and higher even than the Eiffel Tower. Millau is also famous for its glove making. The Spanish border is not that far about 1.5 hrs drive and Barcelona is 3 hours by car.

We had great weather during our stay and the children really enjoyed the swimming pool which was safe and warm. The village has local shops including a grocers and two bakers within a few minutes walk. We found the beaches were excellent, long and sandy and really enjoyed the beach at Portiragnes. Valras was a lot busier but had everything the children needed. The villa also was very comfortable for us and we enjoyed the barbecues at night on the rear terrace. The price is excellent. It was easy to get to and convenient for the motorway - we made a trip to Carcassone and Montpellier. Carcassone well worth doing. Also enjoyed the local market and was particularly impressed with the town and market in Pezenas on the Saturday, although the main street was having a lot of work done, which spoilt it a bit, the old town was lovely. Particularly enjoyed the fact the owners had left some toys in the garage for the children to play with. Response: This family were very pleasant and enjoyed their stay for the second time in the villa. Its a pleasure to meet clients like this. We will be more than happy to welcome them back. |

Returned from a delightful visit to Cers with my daughter & grandchildren. The house was exactly what we had hoped for and indeed expected: part of a village with all it's amenities yet removed and secure enough behind the hedging for both children & adults to relax in the sunshine. It was as much a pleasure to watch the the children having fun in the pool as it was to sit beside it with a glass of wine or beer after dinner. We stayed pretty close to home during our holiday & were happy to do so as there was plenty to see & do. Hopefully next time we'll stay for longer! |

Firstly let me say it was relatively cheap but lets get down to the place in general, The pool was cold even though it was June and when I say cold that is an understatement set at 10 degrees, as for the property itself well if you like Fort Knox then you will love this place as trying to get the Gate open firstly was a task especially in the pouring rain and then trying to gain access to the Key Box was also akin to getting into the aforementioned Fort Knox. Inside the place was reasonably clean but the standing instruction took an age to read and made one feel most unwelcome. Careful when drinking the tap water as the taste is acquired, better still stick to Mineral Water as for food if you decide to cook shop around for your groceries as the Local Carrefore is not all that good value but fresh fruit and vegetables can be obtained from the local roadside sellers etc. The cooking facilities where adequate as was the beds however it does say the sheets etc would be changed weekly, well if only that were true and we were staying for three weeks with three people for the first week and then two for the rest so washing them ourselves was the order of the day, the pool once again was kept clean but I found something Very Very Nasty sticking to the curtains that had no business being there in the back Bedroom (Large). Watch the instructions for the rubbish as the Sunday / Wednesdays are alternate collections? the place itself is almost under the flight path both in to and out of the Beziers Airport The area surrounding Cers is great for all types of holiday maker with the sea being around 20 Min's away whilst the canal Du Midi is 5 Min's away and the National Park 30 Min's to the North with Beziers 10 Min's away via the rather busy Main Road which ends at a very busy and rather dangerous Roundabout however that can be avoided with care and once clear of this main road I would recommend travelling in to the areas around Carcassonne and also Montpelier as the sites around are great! Take a trip on the Canel Du Midi as that is time well spent as are the beaches to the south. All I would say in closing is Enjoy the holiday but be aware that you are required to lock the shutters every time you leave the house and make sure that you empty the bins on the correct days or you will be charged extra for that and check the curtains ?? Response: This reviewer has failed to mention his concern re pool temperature to the property caretakers or any other problems he may have encountered during his stay, or even afterwards. They have also misread the property advert and guidelines sent prior to arrival for the property which clearly states that extra linen changes can be ordered, and paid for directly, if required, with the company providing the maid services. |
