The Languedoc-Roussillon region

About the Languedoc region:

The Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, in which our holiday home is situated, is the fastest-growing area of the country. It offers hundreds of kilometres of sandy beaches, beautiful rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see (it is France’s largest wine-producing region), and huge numbers of historical sights - from dramatic castle ruins to beautiful abbeys and roman ruins. In Carcassonne you’ll find the world’s largest medieval castle - La Cité, not far from the beautiful tree-lined Canal du Midi. Just south are the Cathar Castle ruins - perched on rocky outcrops with spectacular views of the Pyrénées and the Mediterranean. In Nîmes you’ll find the Maison Carée Roman temple and the Les Arènes roman amphitheatre. and just north of that the Pont du Gard - the world’s largest roman aqueduct. All along the coast, you can enjoy superb seafood in the many fishing villages and towns such as Bouzigues, Sète, Collioure and Gruissan.

The weather is hot and sunny - with over 300 days of sunshine a year. That makes it the perfect climate for wine - the region’s wine domains dot the landscape, producing deliciously fruity reds and whites such as Picpoul de Pinet and Viognier. You can pop into almost any of these to taste their wines, or enjoy them in the region’s excellent local restaurants, many of which offer outdoor seating in leafy squares.

Getting to our holiday home in the Languedoc is easy and inexpensive. The Ramparts gîte is only 30 minutes from Béziers airport, and also within 90 minutes of the airports of Montpellier, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Nîmes, Avignon and Girona in Spain (flights by RyanAir, FlyBe and British Airways, amongst others.)

"Very clean, large house, fully equipped with views of vineyards"

This home was exceptionally clean (gites in winter can sometimes smell or be damp but this home was SOOOO CLEAN!).
The owner understands exactly what equipment their customer needs and there was everything from an Oyster opening knife to a Parasol & chairs for the beach!
The house is cold initially but when the heaters are on it is lovely and warm - I imagine in the summer it will be a perfect cool haven from the sun!
The terrace is perfect for breakfast, and the boulangerie is 2 minutes walk with THE BEST almond Croissants I have ever tasted! There is a local pub / cafe, a tabac and a little shop selling cheese, meats, crisps, drinks etc.
In the vicinity there is an intermarche with fish, cheese, meat counter (cooked and raw meat).
Lakes, rivers, canals, beach, wine domaines for wine tasting........
There is a FANTASTC book in the house telling you where to go, it is massive and included everything you will every need ( even all market days, times, towns and what type of market (food/ flea/antique) so don't worry about researching the area - the owners really have put a sterling effort into this!
Thank you for the free wine :-)

"A clean, comfortable and interesting gite - perfect for exploring the area"

We received a very warm welcome from the owners who were readily available if we had any queries or problems.
The house in the centre of this charming village has been well modernised, yet has kept its own quirky character. It was very clean, tidy and well-supplied including Wi-Fi.
The morning stroll to the boulangerie followed by breakfast on the terrace made a great start to each day before heading off to explore the area.

"Spacious, attractive, and great location"

My wife and I rented this place from a few days before Christmas till just after the new year. We shared it with our daughter and a dear family friend for much of our stay. It proved to be exactly what we wanted and needed for our stay in Languedoc.

Extending to three floors of a beautifully renovated Medieval structure in the old quarter of the town, the Ramparts is quite roomy -- sitting room and bedroom and two baths on the ground floor, two bedrooms and another toilet on the first floor, large sitting room and well appointed kitchen on the second. Note that this means you will be climbing stairs a lot during your stay, however. If that is an issue, you may have a less pleasant experience.

The town of Saint-Geniès-de-Fontedit is a lovely old village in the Hérault Department with an ideal location in a sea of vineyards. An amazing number of wine domaines are located within only a few miles of the town. A few kilometers off the D-909, the village is only about 15 minutes from Béziers with its markets, gare (TGV service), and car rental services. the Mediterranean Sea is about half an hour south of the village (even in winter it's beautiful). About 15 minutes to the north are the Cévennes and the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc, with its dramatic hills and valleys and beautiful villages.

If car rentals and driving are not your thing, the village is well served by a regional bus line from Béziers , easily researched on line. Ticket prices are very low.

There are several shops in Saint-Geniès-de-Fontedit, including a boulangerie, a presse/tabac, and a good carry-out pizza place. In nearby Magalas is an extraordinary, upscale restaurant called O Bontemps where we ate an absolutely wonderful meal. Also in Magalas is an Intermarche, which sells most anything you'll need.

The hosts at the Ramparts were welcoming and made our stay very pleasant. Their witty Christmas decorations were sweet. They were available via email (the place has free wifi) to answer questions and offer assistance during our stay. While their English is excellent, you should be aware that this is rural France, and many people have no English. That said, we found the people thereabouts to be very patient with us as we worked at communicating with them.

I could go on, I suppose, but let me sum up by saying that staying at the Ramparts was a wonderful experience and I recommend it to all.

"charming medieval house in quiet village easy travelling distance of attractions"

We were staying with a view to buying property and the renter was extremely helpful. The property was a perfect retreat from busy days: we bought our evening meal from the local supermarket having eaten like lords at lunch; breakfast was provided by the bakery in the village.

"A living example of historic France"

As you approach the Ramparts gite from the town's square (friendly people and a nice cafe) you can feel the history surrounding you, the houses around you speak of centuries of lives lived among the beautiful rolling countryside of the Languedoc. From the outside it appears small but once through the door the ground floor is very spacious and well equipped with bathroom, shower room, laundry area and a very comfortable bedroom. Climbing the spiraling stone staircase you arrive at the second floor with another two comfortable bedrooms and a toilet, continuing on your way upwards you are rewarded on the third floor with access to spacious living area with a well equipped kitchen, dining and sitting areas, for us it was great to have access to UK satellite TV! But the piece de rsistance has to be the balcony, opening out to reveal incredible views over this beautiful region of Southern France - if you get the chance to visit the Ramparts don't miss it!
