The Beziers area
Beziers is a bustling town in the Hérault département in southern France, which is situated at the crossing of the River Orb and the Canal du Midi, 60 km southwest of Montpellier. Beziers is well situated for the Mediterranean sea, the Pyrenees, the Corbières and the Cévennes. It is a centre of the wine and spirit trade and has many wonderful shops and cafés in the centre of town. It is a very interesting town to visit, which features include pre-Roman and Roman remains, the Gothic church of St-Nazaire, formerly a cathedral, and ancient city walls. Or visit the wonderful weekly flower market, and don?t forget the excellent wide choice of vineyards to visit and sample. Why not even have a mini cruise on the Canal du Midi to enjoy the beautiful scenary? There are some very good town festivals including the Fiesta d?Oc and even the Feria bull fighting.
This 360-km network of navigable waterways linking the Mediterranean and the Atlantic through 328 structures (locks, aqueducts, bridges, tunnels, etc.) is one of the most remarkable feats of civil engineering in modern times. Built between 1667 and 1694, it paved the way for the Industrial Revolution. The care that its creator, Pierre-Paul Riquet, took in the design and the way it blends with its surroundings turned a technical achievement into a work of art.
We have lots of local information we can email you. Béziers was the home town of Paul Riquet, the engineer who was responsible for the linking of the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans with the canal du Midi. The canal actually passes through the town on its final short stretch to the Mediterranean. Béziers is also an arty, cultural city that knows how to throw a good party - as you?ll find out if you visit during its famous Féria, or the Festa d?Oc or the Wine festival. While in Béziers, don?t miss a visit to the 12th and 15th century Saint Nazaire Cathedral, the 17th century town houses, the theatre, the English style garden, ?le Plateau des Poètes?, created in 1865, the Bullring, the 12th?13th century basilica of Saint Aphrodise, the 19th century market halls, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Biterrois Museum of local history. Here are some of the events happening in Béziers throughout the year : The Festival of Saint Aphrodise and the ?Procession of the Camel? (the town?s emblem) in April, the summer festival with bullfighting and shows on August 15th and Festival of Sainte Cécile in November.
