The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
With over 300 days of sunshine a year temperatures are often around 25 to 30 in the summer and can go higher with spring and autumn days often over 20 degrees. Winter lasts just 6 weeks around Xmas and January.
As well as Beziers, nearby towns include Bedarieux, Lamalou les Bains (a spa town), Pezenas and Clermont L'Herault.
Pezenas has a great Saturday Market, Clermont's market is Wednesday, Bedarieux Mondays and Beziers Fridays. The area is also great for the beaches which are some of the best in France being long and sandy with lots of little fishing harbours and oyster farms along the inland sea lakes dotted with flamingoes in the spring and autumn migration periods.
Inland the area is full of vineyards, with sloping hills and perched villages, often with chateaus, some of which can be visited either to taste the wines or to view on occasions. Faugeres where the Masters Bakery is located offers some of the best wines in the Languedoc. All the villages have fetes throughout the year and Faugeres in no exception.
The historic sites of Carcassone and the Roman aqueduct at the Pont du Gard are also in the Languedoc, as well as the walled town of Aigues Mortes where some of the crusades set sail from. There are of course lots of historic cities and towns to visit, including Pezenas, Beziers with its Cathar and Occitan history, Perpignan with its Catalan culture, Nimes and Narbonne with their Roman past, Agde and ancient Greek town and for large city facilities the attractive Montpellier is under an hours drive
Located in Bedarieux with are shops, restaurants and bars as well as teh Monday weekly market and it is set in the Orb River Valley with the rolling hills surrounding the villa. Bedarieux is situated on the edge of the beautiful Languedoc National Park and on the banks of the river Orb. A 10 minute drive gives access to the golf course and spa town of Lamalou-Les-Bains.
The Olive Mill at Clerment L'Herault is 20 minutes drive and the Knights Templar village of St Guilhelm le Dessert about 35 minutes drive. There is bike hire, canoeing, fishing, and of course opportunities for wine-tasting with the Languedoc region being the largest wine producing area in France. There are also plenty of local shopping opportunities and markets to explore at you leisure.
The Spanish border and the Pyrenees lie just 90 minutes from the house and Barcelona can be reached in 3 ½ hours for a fantastic day trip or long weekend. There are also good train connections to Beziers, Millau and Montpellier.
The Beziers area
Faugeres has basic shops and a bakery as well as restaurants being available nearby. These include many such as the Forge in Bedarieux, the table de Vigneron in Laurens, OBontemps with its Michelin bib in Magalas (10 minutes drive) as well as a wide range of family run restaurants and pizzerias, some of which will deliver.
Local fetes are all worth visiting when in the area, and start in February with the Mimosa festival and run through the year until Xmas. The Faugeres wine festival is not to be missed and very popular! As well as the music festivals in Pezenas and Bedarieux, and the major 'feria' in mid August in Beziers, which goes on for 5 days (and nights) with everything in entertainment free.
