~~~~ Horseshoe and Bay Tree Cottage were finalists in this years REYTA awards, East Yorkshire's Tourism Awards~~~~.
Our cottages are ideally located for a varied holiday and well situated to discover the secrets of the Yorkshire Wolds. Countryside location with coast, town and city, all within easy striking distance.
Horseshoe Cottage is "A wonderful place for a relaxing break", ideal for a long weekend/midweek holiday for 2 to 5 people, away from the stresses of everyday life. We have had many lovely remarks about Horseshoe in our visitors book, and our questionnaires. Other Trip Adviser reviews are: " Perfect cottage in perfect village", "A beautiful well appointed cottage", "Everything you hope it will be".
The cottage is situated on the quiet street of Nordham, North Cave, and it was originally one of the gardener's cottages to Fawley House. Fawley House Garden is open for the ngs and it is possible to see the gardens during your stay by donating £4/head (children free) to help the charity which we support, which raises for Macmillan, Marie Curie, Help the hospices and many others. The extensive gardens have fruit and vegetable growing areas, and when available and in season, we offer you a fresh veg basket during your stay.
If our smaller cottage for a couple is taken, we are happy to take bookings for just 2 people in Horseshoe, with a discount for reduced occupancy. Alternatively, Horseshoe can sleep up to 7, with 2 extra beds (£25 extra/bed), and it can also be linked to Bay Tree Cottage, next door to sleep up to 9. Useful for wedding parties, family celebrations and business events.
In March 2014, our Nordham Cottages entry to the East Yorkshire Tourism awards was shortlisted, and we were given a place as a finalist for the Remarkable Self Catering Provider category, something we are really proud of. The cottage is assessed as 4* by Quality in Tourism, and we work hard to retain our star rating, stiving to offer our customers a welcoming, functional and comfortable environment .We like to involve our visitors by asking for their suggestions: there are very few we have not acted upon.
Our visitor comments make me smile, and its good to know we have satisfied customers.
Horseshoe Cottage is situated in the quiet hamlet of Nordham, almost part of North Cave, where you can find a village shop/post office, playground, and wetlands bird sanctuary, all only a 5 minute walk away:
The village offers the shop/post office, perfect for the things you forgot to bring like milk, butter, bread, papers or even wine; and a really good fruit and veg shop 'Walkers' on the edge of the village. Even a special occasion ladies dress boutique!
A really good supermarket selling local meats and local bakery products, and Leaks butchers are five minutes away at South Cave, where there is the Fox and Coney Pub, The Gallery (Italian) Restaurant, a chemist and other gift shops. The bigger supermarkets, are only 15 minutes away at Market Weighton and Brough.
There are 2 pubs within walking distance and plenty to see:The North Cave Wetlands' are at the end of the our road for spectacular wading bird life, including Avocets. Lovely ' destination' walks - the Gastro Pub at Hotham (30 mins) and also Drewtons Farm Shop for a delicious award winning breakfast/lunch/evening meal on a Friday night (NB closes at 9)
If you really want to work up an appetite you can walk to the much renowned gastro pub The Star at Sancton, this would probably take an hour. If you are just looking for good old diet busting Fish and Chips or a Chinese to bring back to the cottage, there are both at Newport, 5 minutes away in the car.
Plenty to do: There are two plant Nurseries in the village and Fawley House garden to visit; Bird watching; Kayaking on a Saturday; Walking and great cycling. Indoor bowls is offered in the winter months. Riding, Clay Shooting & Motor Cross Track 5/10 minutes away. We even have a Dive centre! There's the very popular Drewton's Farm Shop to visit which has produce, wine, gifts and a great restaurant (a customer favourite) and the Bird of Prey Centre only 5 minutes away, if that.
Enjoy the clean fresh air and the peaceful Wolds countryside famed by Hockney. Discover the nearby towns and cities such as Beverley, Hull and York along with many others and explor the East Yorkshire coastline, which varies from white chalk cliffs to long sandy beaches stretching from Flamborough Head to Spurn Point.
*Suggestions for the Summer holidays - The Deep in Hull; Jorvik Viking Centre in York; North York Moors National Park; Royal Armories in Leeds; : Bridlington Birds of Prey and Animal Park, Calypso Cove at Barnsley. Six full, 'fun packed' days, and Horseshoe Cottage is ideally located to be able to do them all. These are just a few of the many things you could do.
Its show and festival season.
Here are some to go to close to Nordham Cottages this summer/Autumn:
Friday 19th - Sunday 28th September York Food Festival
Sunday 21st September Cottingham Food and Drink Festival
Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th October Beverley Real Ale Festival
Sunday 5th October Beverley Food Festival
Also in October, the Beverley Literature Festival
Wow..... it all happens in East Yorkshire!
Horseshoe Cottage is only 2 minutes from the motorway which will take you to Leeds and Harrogate with ease, and only 45 minutes from York on the A1079. The cottage is only 20 minutes from Hull and the ferry terminals for North Sea Ferries, and 30 minutes from Humberside airport for those wishing to come from the continent.
Visit the dramatic chalk cliffs at Bempton with world renowned bird-life to see. Walk along the sandy beaches at Bridlington, Hornsea and beyond. After a good day out, return to a relaxing, well equipped home and if the weather is good, light the log barbecue and enjoy an evening outdoors. Northern England region
Many are familiar with the Yorkshire Dales in North Yorkshire, but East Yorkshire is quite a well kept secret. It has so much to offer! The lovely Wolds countryside, where you can pull off the road and hear the sky larks high above. Stop off at a Wolds pub for a bite to eat or a quiet pint!
Our varied coastline: long sandy beaches at Hornsea and Bridlington to the highest chalk cliffs in Britain at Bempton, home to 200,000 seabirds. Visit Hornsea Mere, Yorkshire's largest natural freshwater lake or the man made North Cave Wetlands, just at the end of our street -stroll down there on an evening to enjoy the sunset as well as the birdlife If you want to see another birdlife hotspot, visit Blacktoft Sands, the largest tidal reedbed in England. For walkers, the noteable paths of the Wolds Way and the Minster Way are a fantastic way to see our landscape, along with the many public footpaths we can recommend in our neighbouring villages. For cyclists the route 66 is the obvious choice, and there are many local tried and tested cycle routes around N. Cave. We are lucky to have York and Hull with their many visitor attractions, both cities very different, both of historical significance with much to see and do. Market towns of Beverley, Howden, Pocklington, Market Weighton are all only 20 minutes away, and are all well worth a visit. We have a good selection of gardens and historic houses - Burton Agnes Hall, Burnby Hall Gardens, Sledmere House, Sewerby Hall and Gardens, and some of the best churches to see in the country. If you enjoy Horse Racing, there are courses at Beverley and York.
There are several different festivals in our area, for example Hull Jazz Festival from 20th to 29th July, and festivals in Beverley throughout th summer, and events at Burton Agnes Hall. There is plenty of theatre to see in Hull and York as well as open air performances in the county, the nearest at Pocklington's Burnby Hall on July 28th showing Pride and Predjucie. With all the above to get through and more, we can guarantee you wont be bored!
From the door in North Cave, there are lovely destination walks - Hotham Arms in the next door village, a short walk away; Drewton Farm Shop for an award winning breakfast; South Cave to the Gallery for a lunch or evening meal, or to see Angie's Wild Bird Cafe at the North Cave Wetlands for a ' bacon bap'. If walking isn't your thing, there's plenty more in store.
In North Cave you can go Fishing, Diving, Kayaking and Canoeing, play Bowls, and in the neighbouring village there's Golf & Spa, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Polo, & Horse Riding. If you 'green fingered', we have 4 ngs gardens from the door and Mires Beck Nursery and Marjoram Nursery in the village (which also has a fruit and veg shop). If wildlife is your thing, the paths by the stream, the parkland and footpaths around the village as well as the North Cave Wetlands, have plenty to show.
In addition to those already mentioned, there are other fine restaurants in the area, The Star at Sancton, and the Boars Nest at Rudston Walk, the Michelin Starred restaurant The Pipe and Glass at Dalton, and many good restaurants in Beverley including Cerutti 2 and the Westwood. If you don't want to go to the coast for Fish and Chips, there's Johny Haddock in Newport, the next village!
For food shopping visit Beverley market on a Saturday morning or the Farmers market in South Cave, or one of the nearby supermarkets in South Cave, Brough, Market Weighton, Howden or Pocklington. For a day 'in town', not much can beat Beverley which buzzes on a Saturday, with the lovely market in the square near the ' butter cross'. There are boutique shops and a fine selection of cafes and places to enjoy sitting for a while, before you look at the Minster or do the Town Trail!
