The North Wales / Snowdonia/Gwynedd region

Tanycastell is located in the heart of Snowdonia National Park, the most popular of Wales' 3 National Parks. The cottage is located in the countryside on the outskirts of Dolwyddelan village 4 miles west of Betws y Coed. Accross the road from the cottages is the famous Dolwyddelan Castle built by Llywelyn the Great between 1210 and 1240. It is one of only a handful of remaining Welsh castles. 4 miles above the valley is the birthplace of William Morgan, Ty Mawr y Wybrnant, who translated the bible in 1588. The house and surrounding grounds are open to visitors and has over 140 bibles in different languages. In the village of Dolwyddelan is a beautiful small 15C church - its name, St Gwyddelan given by a visiting Irish monk. 2 miles down the road towards Blaenau Ffestiniog is the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, and Gloddfa Ganol slate mines - the latter being the largest open cast mine in the world. Underground trips take you to the heart of slate mining history and gives a great insight into the harshness of miners lives. Numerous famous castles are within reach and well worth visiting.

Tanycastell itself has great historical significance, being the birthplace of John Jones Talysarn. A famous Welsh Methodist Calvinist preacher, a large marble monument and slate inscribed mount have been erected here to commemorate the great man.

The Betws-y-Coed / Dolwyddelan area

Tanycastell is located at the foot of Moel Siabod and therefore many walks and cycle routes can be started from the cottage. 4 miles east is Betws y Coed, North Wales' tourist hub. Beyond the Crimea pass is Blaenau Ffestiniog which is about to open a range of brand new exciting mountain bike trails. Half an hour away is Llandudno, North Wales' famous Victorian seaside resort. Harlech and Black Rock beaches are only 30 minutes away, or you could walk or take the train up to see the new Hafod Eryri cafe built on the summit of Snowdon. Numerous local festivals are held throughout the year including Wakestock.

The Grade II listed Welsh cottage is located on the A470 in Dolwyddelan and can be reached from Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham airports as well as the Dublin Holyhead ferry service. It is connected to the main train service via Llandudno Junction and the small station is located in the heart of the village of Dolwyddelan. Airport, bus and train station pick up available on arrangement.
