The South/Borders region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the rugged landscapes of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway is littered with fortresses and strongholds, testimony to its dramatic history. Moving north, the Highlands are to Scotland what the Pyrenees are to France, with equally breathtaking scenery and fantastic opportunities for walking and mountaineering.
Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are particularly famous for skiing, whilst Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain at 1343m, is a firm favourite for those seeking a challenge. For the less energetic, the Whisky Trail provides a unique way of exploring many of Scotland’s attractions and for quieter moments, there’s always Loch Ness and a chance to spot the elusive monster! Scotland also has some of Britain’s best and cleanest beaches. Cromarty is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins and Nairn, whilst claiming to be one of the sunniest and driest places in the country, has glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.
Several islands lie off the Scottish coast, each with their own character and heritage, however the Isle of Skye is probably the best known and most visited. As the largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s turbulent geological past has bequeathed it a stunning coastline. Experienced walkers are drawn to the Black Cuillin Mountains, whilst those less experienced have an array of lower level coastal walks from which to choose or alternatively, visitors can take some time to visit Skye’s capital, the charming harbour town of Portree.
Berwick / Reston area
Nestling in the beautiful Scottish Borders, near to the Lammermuir Hills, sits the tranquil village of Reston. With its own village pub and some superb golf courses nearby, this peaceful place is only five miles from the stunning beaches of the east coast, and only 11 miles from the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
If you like outdoors life, you’ll love the walking, horse riding and fishing opportunities presented by the surrounding countryside, and the harbour at St Abbs nearby is the perfect place to while away a lazy day or evening. The thriving cultural centre of Edinburgh, as well as Eyemouth, Duns, and Alnwick are all within reach, which makes Reston the perfect base for a great holiday.
