The Northern England / Northumberland region

Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park.
Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages.
Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Berwick-Upon-Tweed area
Having changed hands 14 times whilst England and Scotland fought for control of the border, Berwick-upon-Tweed is now England’s most northerly town. This lovely coastal town is composed of with quaint narrow streets enclosed within great Elizabethan walls and retains much of its period charm. The Tudor battlements now provide great walking routes rather than protection and visitors can enjoy spectacular views over the coast and river estuary from the tops. The town offers not only the usual shops, supermarkets, restaurants and pubs but also the innovative Maltings Arts Centre which provides an extensive programme of cultural events including music, theatre and cinema. Visitors who prefer the outdoors are also well catered for with excellent fishing, golfing and riding facilities all within a short distance from the town.

,A lovely spacious cottage, privacy still retained although still within a group of cottages. Great views across fields and to the mountains in the distance. A lovely walk along the lane with horses to feed and the opportunity to take in the wonderful views and watch the sunsets. Great central locations for all the tourist attractions. Just loved everything about our holiday - thank you to the owners.
