The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages.
Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Berwick-Upon-Tweed / Lowick area
Seven miles inland from Holy Island, Lowick is a delightful village set in an area renowned for its rugged beauty. The village is ideally placed for exploring the region, and sports enthusiasts will find much to enjoy – whether their favourite activity is walking, fishing, riding, cycling or golfing. There are, in fact, no fewer than eight golf courses within a 20-mile radius. Two miles from Lowick is the village of Ford, which has a castle and a number of craft shops to attract visitors. Lowick is close to the dramatic Northumberland coastline and to the historic border town of Berwick.
