The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike.
Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages.
Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Berwick-Upon-Tweed area
The coastal town of Berwick has a fascinating history. It is the most northern town in England and as such has been the subject of bitter battles over the centuries, as first English and then the Scottish sought control. In all, it changed owners 14 times before ending up south of the border. The narrow streets are, even now, protected by sturdy walls from the Elizabethan era. The townspeople are proud of the Maltings Arts Centre, which offers a hugely varied programme of music, theatre and other entertainment. Berwick also has fine shops, pubs and restaurants and families will enjoy the leisure centre with its wave pool. There is also first-rate fishing, horse-riding and golf on offer locally. The seaside town of Spittal, which boasts beautiful sandy beaches, is only two miles away and the whole Heritage Coastline is easily accessed.

,The Long Barn was an absolutely fabulous property for the money. It was spacious, beautifully maintained and had all the equipment you need for a relaxed holiday. The surrounding villages are very quaint with lots of pubs for relaxed meals. The location of the Barn allows easy access to the beautiful Northumberland Coast, as well as the town of Alnwick. A highly recommended property.
