Northern England region

The Old School sits in the tiny Hamlet of Mordington Clappers, some 4 miles inland of England’s most northerly town, Berwick-upon-Tweed. The climate is normally one of cool summers, cold winters and relatively little rain. The hours of sunshine are believed to be almost as high as at Dunbar which records the most hours in Scotland.

Its location, 200 yards from the border between England and Scotland, makes The Old School an ideal base for exploring the East and Central Scottish Borders and the North-Northumberland coast with its epic castles and fabulous beaches. Edinburgh is approximately an hours drive or train journey to the north and Newcastle a similar distance to the south.

Northumberland and the Scottish Borders are areas of great natural beauty and tranquility, yet are full of life and rich in history. There are plentiful attractions and activities of all types as well as numerous eateries.

Ranging from coastal beauty spots such as Tweedmouth, Coldingham (renowned for surfing), and Spittal (Victorian seaside village). Further afield are a variety of interesting and diverse Scottish border towns. These include Selkirk, Galashiels, Melrose, Kelso, Hawick and Peebles. Each of these towns have their own individual facilities and charm. For example, Kelso (35 minutes drive) has a well known racecourse and a wide range of country sports shops.

The spectacular Northumberland coast is 20 minutes drive away, and includes Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island, Seahouses and the Farne Islands.

If your passions are shooting, fishing or playing golf then The Old School is located within easy reach of a number of links golf courses, the river Tweed, which offers first class salmon fishing, and several shooting estates. (Feel free to use the set of golf clubs provided). The picturesque coastal village of St. Abbs some 10 miles north of Berwick is a major dive attraction and Coldingham Bay offers some of the best surfing in the UK

If you wish to go out and about during your stay at the Old School there are plenty of attractions nearby. Berwick Upon Tweed itself hosts a Theatre and Leisure Centre with pool, and a number of good restaurants and coffee shops.

The nearby fishing port of Eyemouth has a maritime museum which is worth a visit as is Chain Bridge Honey Farm at nearby Horncliffe.

The Scottish Borders is also home to numerous castles, towers, abbeys & stately homes and is a fantastic area for outdoor pursuits. The rolling hills are perfect for hill walking, and the area is renowned for shooting, fishing and riding.

Berwick-Upon-Tweed

Berwick was once Scotland’s wealthiest Royal Burgh and greatest seaport. Its strategic location and commercial importance put Berwick in the front line enduring 300 years of warfare in the middle ages. The period 1296 to 1482 saw the castle and town change hands 13 times between the Scots and the English.

From the 16th century until 1836, Berwick was an independent borough, neither in Scotland nor in England. It’s ambiguous status led to the popular story that, through administrative error, the borough is still at war with Russia! Though its role as a garrison town ended in the 1960s, historic barracks are a reminder of Berwick’s military past.

Today Berwick lies peacefully behind its encircling walls, from which there are panoramic views up the Tweed Valley towards the Cheviot Hills and along the Northumberland coast to Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle.

Things to do in Berwick-upon-Tweed

There are lots of things to do in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Many people enjoy the walk around the Elizabethan walls. This takes about 40 minutes, with lovely views of the area. Berwick was LS Lowry’s favourite place in the UK and the subject of many of his paintings. You can walk the Lowry Trail with information panels at key places in and around the town that Lowry painted.

You may choose to enjoy a meal at one of the town’s many restaurants or pubs or enjoy an evening entertainment at the Maltings Theatre.

For the more active, there is a swimming pool at the leisure centre, or you could hire a bike and explore the local countryside.

There are many coastal walks, information about these are held in the Welcome Pack at the Old School.

Spittal has a lovely sandy beach or you may prefer to enjoy the peaceful sight of Berwick’s famous swans on the Tweed and to look out for grey seals in the estuary.

"Wonderful Stay"

The Old School really is a home away from home. We stayed for a long weekend in December and we couldn't ask for any more.

The location is perfect with plenty to do and the Old School itself was luxury and extremely well equipped. My 3 year old particularly loved bear corner and playing with the toys. (I suppose you could never have enough toys when you're three)

Helen made the booking process so simple and was very easy to get hold of and speak to if we had any queries.

In all we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and it was nice to be able to all sit together on an evening which isn't something you usually get when a large group go away together.

I wouldn't hesitate in returning to the Old School in the future.

Thanks again Helen.

Thank you for your lovely comments which we appreciate. We are so glad that bear corner was a hit with your 3 year old. It was also good to know that the spacious lounge allowed you all to sit together and that you found the property to be luxurious and well equipped :-) We are also glad that we were able to handle the booking process and queries to your satisfaction. You would be welcome again anytime on a return visit. Kindest regards Helen and Andrew

"Home away from home"

Old School is a top of the range establishment with a homely feel. All ameneties available, washing machine, dishwasher etc. The location away from the hustle and bustle of town-life makes for an ideal venue for a relaxing stay, still close enough to the town of Berwick upon Tweed. Welcome cake made our stay special from arrival. Great walks in area and the coast is beautiful. Visit to Northumberland a must.

Thank you for your kind comments. It was lovely to welcome an International Cricket Umpire from South Africa to The Old School. We are so glad you liked the cricket bat cake we arranged to welcome you and make you feel at home! We look forward to welcoming you back to The Old School. Kindest regards. Helen and Andrew.
