The Sri Lanka Southern Coast region
South of Colombo, Beruwala marks the beginning of a 130 km-stretch of beaches, where resort development has made immense strides in recent years. Good bathing in the bay all year round. A sandy stretch of beach popular with tour operators. Beruwala is a characteristic fishing town, Its an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sea.
Beruwala area
Beruwala beach - a sandy strech of beach popular with tour operators. Here you can take part in various watersports activities, swim in the bay or simply relax in the sun with a good book.
Lighthouse - take a boat trip to a small island just off-shore and enjoy the panoramic views from the top of of the lighthouse.
Bentota Ganga This forms the river boundary between the western & southern Provinces. About 4 kms upriver from the tourist settlement is the Galapatha Vihara. This 12th century temple has few remains, but does include a carved gateway along private inscription recording a gift of lands & Slaves to the monastery on the site.
Brief Garden This was the home of the late septuagenarian landscape artist, Bevis Bawa. The sprawling house in the midst of this tranquil oasis is a veritable museum of art, containing Bawa's own works, and those of friends of friends, such as George Keyt & Donald Friends. Bawa created this enchanting garden on a hillside with wonderful views off Kalawila between 1929 & 1989. Bawa's private collection of paintings, sculptures photographs and furniture (many colonial antiques), provides an added incentive to visit the bird-filled 5 acre landscaped garden with cool, shady woodland paths, many nature specimen trees, exotic flowering plants and interesting water features highly recommended.
Aluthgama Market Monday is market day in Aluthgama, just 15 minutes stroll across the bridge. Bustling with locals selling fresh fish, meat and vegetables, the produce is as colourful as the saris they wear.
Kande Viharaya. This is a 12th century Buddhist temple, which is situated very close to the Beach Villa.
Water Sports Water-sports centres are located all along the coast, where a variety of activities are available to suit all abilities and ages The calm river is perfect for water-skiing and windsurfing.
Kosgoda Turtle Farm Visit the local small turtle farms at Kosgoda. Join in the egg burial by night, admire the baby turtles by day and take a journey to the sea to release the young back into their natural environment.
Mask Museum Mask Museum is primarily a workshop & showroom. Some of the exhibits tracing the tradition of mask dancing are interesting and informative. Antique shops often sell newly crafted items which have been "aged", as it is illegal to take out any article over 50 years old without a government permit.
Galle The port of Galle, thought by some to be the Biblical city of Tarshish, splendidly illustrates the solidity of the Dutch presence in Sri Lanka. The 36-hectare (89 acre) Dutch Fort, built in 1663, has withstood the ravages of time. Its massive ramparts surround the promontory that forms the older part of Galle, and shelters within its walls sturdy Dutch houses, museums and churches. This area has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere that seems almost detached from the flow of history. The New Oriental Hotel, built for Dutch governors in 1684, is a colonial gem with a wonderfully atmospheric bar.
Coral Gardens - Hikkaduwa Hikkaduwa is the island's most developed beach resort, and has a range of accommodation, good restaurants and pleasant cafe-lined beaches. There's good snorkeling at an attractive and easily accessible coral sanctuary, scuba diving at a number of wrecks in the bay, tours by glass-bottomed boats and pretty good surfing. It is a relaxed location, similar to many Asian beach resorts popular with Western travellers. There are also plenty of handicraft shops, a Buddhist temple, a nearby lake with abundant birdlife.
Even if you're not a scuba diver, Hikkaduwa offers underwater delights. Only 200m offshore, in shallow water no more than 4m (13 ft.) deep, a reef protects an expanse of brilliant coral populated by vividly colourful reef fish and even the occasional Turtle. It is perfect snorkelling territory, but for the less confident, glass bottomed boats also operate from the beach.
Sinharaja Just 1 hour further and your mind shifts to admire another natural gem – Sri Lanka’s only rainforest – Sinharaja. Admire the unique orchids and the sounds of the Woodpeckers and the grey tailed monkey.
Colombo Spend a day shopping and sightseeing in the bustling capital of Colombo. Colombo is a shopper’s paradise, containing a number of department stores and local fashion outlets where you will find up-to the minute fashions at extremely discounted prices.
