The Brandenburg/Berlin region

Berlin and the surrounding area has many interesting sights worthy of a trip out of the city. Potsdam, about an hour from Berlin, but reachable on the S-Bahn (overground tube system), has a quaint old town centre along with over-the-top palaces and parks. An hour and a half away is Lutherstadt Wittenberg which is famous for being the cradle of German protestant church.
The old town is worth a visit. Poland is also in close proximity! Just over an hour from Berlin is Frankfurt (Oder) right on the border with Poland. The main non-town specific sights around Berlin are the numerous lakes. The Brandenburg area is full of lakes and waterways, often through forested areas. The famous Spreewald area is definitely worth a visit for nature reserves, boating and swimming.
The Berlin / Central Berlin area
Berlin's vibrant cultural scene has a lot to offer. No matter what your preference is, you're guaranteed to find something suiting your taste. Berlin has more than 170 museums and collections. They offer everything from the ancient to the ultra-modern - the Egyptian Nefertiti, the greek Pergamon Altar, the painters of the "Brücke" and the "Bauhaus" and works by Baselitz and Beuys. The works found in the city's museums and collections and private galleries are as exciting as they are diverse.
The city has no definite centre and pockets of attractions are dotted all over. The densest array of sights lies to the east of the Brandenburg Gate, on either side of Unter den Linden. West Berlin's centre has less to offer. Nevertheless visitors should take a look at the broken shard of a church, the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche, which serves as a brutal reminder of World War II. The nearby Zoo and Aquarium also provide a happy distraction.
The east side is Berlin's cultural hub, here you'll find a plethora of museums, bars, music venues and restaurants. Indeed this area of the city is simply one of the most 'happening' and culturally atmospheric destinations in Europe. You won't be bored!
