The Brandenburg/Berlin region
The area surrounding Berlin has many interesting sights worthy of a trip out of the city. Potsdam, about an hour from Berlin, but reachable on the S-Bahn (overground tube system), has a quaint old town centre and over-the-top palaces and parks. An hour and a half away is Lutherstadt Wittenberg famous for being the cradle of German protestant church. The old town is worth a visit.
Poland is also not far away! Just over an hour from Berlin is Frankfurt (Oder) right on the border with Poland. The main non-town specific sights around Berlin are the numerous lakes. The Brandenburg area is full of lakes and waterways, often through forested areas. The famous Spreewald area is definitely worth a visit for nature reserves, boating and swimming.
Berlin / Central Berlin area
The apartment is in Tiergarten, the borough that take its name from the large green area of Tiergarten Park that dominates and that is a link between Mitte and Charlottensbourg. Along the north side of the park you can admire the Sprea while in the south side you can see many important attractions. Potsdamer Platz is an important public square and traffic intersection in the centre of Berlin, lying about one kilometre south of the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag (German Parliament Building) and close to the southeast corner of the Tiergarten Park.
It was totally laid to waste during World War II and then left desolate during the Cold War era when the Berlin Wall bisected its former location, but since the fall of the Wall it has risen again as a glittering new heart for the city and the most visible symbol of the new Berlin.
After 1990, Potsdamer Platz became the focus of attention again, as a large, attractive location which had suddenly become available in the centre of a major European city. It was widely seen as one of the hottest, most exciting building sites in Europe, and subject to much debate amongst architects and planners.
Potsdamer Platz is also home to the Panoramapunkt viewing platform, located 100 m above ground level, which is accessed by riding Europe's fastest elevator. From the Panoramapunkt one can see such landmarks as the DIE BAHN HEADQUARTERS, BRENDERBURG GATE, REICHSTAG, FEDERAL CHANCELLERY, BELLEVUE PALACE, CATHREDAL, GENDARMEN MARKET, HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL AND COMMEMORATION CHURCH.
Nearby Potsdamer Platz there is the KULTURFORUM stretching from the BERLINER PHILARMONIE, a 1963 concert hall by architect Hans Scharoun and home of the BERLIN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA to the NEUE NATIONALGALERIE built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1968.
The SONY CENTRE is a Sony-sponsored building complex located at the Potsdamer Platz. The centre was designed by Helmut Jahn. The whole project was the subject of much criticism from the beginning, and still not everyone applauds how the district was commercialised and replanned. However, the construction was completed in 2000 and the square now attracts around 70,000 visitors a day. At almost any time of the day, the place is alive with people. It is a popular attraction for visitors, having a top shopping area. It is also popular with English speaking film fans, as it has more than 40 screens in three cinemas, including an English speaking cinema, a film academy and a film museum. Sony Centre is considered one of the best masterpiece of modern art in Berlin.
Approximatly 5 minute by car or public transport to Alexanderplatz (centre of East Berlin) as well as to Kurfürstendamm (centre West Berlin).
When you are interested in visiting the highest building throughout the city, the FERMSEHTURM (TV Tower) stands 368 meters high. ALEXANDERPLATZ, where many shopping options await, as well as BRITZERGARTEN and TIERGARTEN, which are the largest parks in the Berlin area.
BERLIN ZOOLOGISCHER GARTEN, which dates back to 1844. A wide-range of species from all over the world resides at this location.. For lovers of plants and flowers, a trip to the city’s botanical gardens may set the mood. The Botanic Museum Berlin is the largest botanical garden throughout the continent.
You can also visit Checkpoint Charlie DDR museum, Dorothenstadtischer Friedhof, Das Nikolaiviertel, Siegessaule, Reichstag, Alexanderplatz, modern architecture all way down the “Unter den Linden” boulevard, the “Brandenburger Tor” monument and theaters can be reached within short time by bus or Ubhan.
