The Berlin region

The birthplace of German actress Marlene Dietrich and the area where David Bowie lived, Schöneberg is located in the former West Berlin, bordering Charlottenburg and West Kreuzberg. It is a smart predominantly middle-class neighbourhood with a relaxed and somewhat fancy feel full of cafe's so you'll be spoilt for choice where to eat and drink. If you're looking to stay in a central area with easy transport access to all the main attractions such as Potsdamer Platz and Museum Island, then you should consider staying here.

Some of the many foreign language schools are also based there, and by night it can be very lively, especially around Nollendorfplatz, home to Berlin's gay & lesbian scene. Back in the 1920's Berlin was one of the few European cities that embraced and loved its alternative culture, and this still rings true today although it is a very mixed area where everyone can enjoy the lively restaurants & cocktail bars. Along with Winterfeldtplatz, which hosts Sunday's weekly foodie market, check out the surrounding areas of Belzigstrasse and Akazienstrasse and stop off for afternoon coffee and cake.

One of the major Berlin attractions in Schöneberg is the busy main thoroughfare, Kurfürstendamm, which is a shopping mecca awash with all the high class brands and big department stores, such as the famous Kaufhaus des Westens, or KaDeWe, on Tauentzienstrasse. Across the other side of the district, former Tempelhof airport is now a venue for international music and fashion shows, and the enormous former runway is great for a stroll and a picnic in the summer months.

"Excellent Berlin Rental"

Great place. Lovely apartment and very comfortable. The only drawback, and this may not be an issue for some, is that the place needs either a french press coffe maker or an Italian mocha maker that you put on the stove. The Nespresso machine makes dreadful coffee so I had to get up and wander the streets to find coffee to bring back to everyone in the flat. If I had known in advance I would probably have brought my own coffee maker. Otherwise, the apartment was excellent.

-The area is ok, a bit edgy. I am not used to so many hookers being nearby but they all seemed nice enough. It was different, definitely not a white glove area. Local restaurants were good and generally the area seemed ok. I would stay there again if the place was as nice as the one we rented.

I would give it a 4.5 but would go to 5 with a decent coffee maker. (I know some people like those Nespresso machines but that is not really coffee, is it?)
