Home description

Up to 19 guests, 8 rooms, 8 baths, this is just the sort of villa many of you are looking for. Whereas so many of these huge houses have lots of rooms but relatively few bathrooms, this house has 8 bedrooms, all with private bathroom. Cal Cosme is a large farmhouse (330m2), originally dating from the 18thC, but newly restored in 2005 with rentals in mind, and sits on a huge property (150 hectaires) in an idyllic spot with majestic views and a new fenced-in 9 x 4.5 meter swimming pool. I know this one is going to be much in demand! The house is great, the setting and views extraordinary, and I can trust the owners here to do everything just right.

Cal Cosme is in a beautiful unspoilt part of the world. This house is surrounded by fields and woods and you can hike up into the hills to the Sanctuary of Mare de Deu de Queralt right from your doorstep. Cal Cosme is located 12 kms southwest of Bergà, the provincial capital of the region.

The Costa Brava/Catalonia region

Catalonia is a small country measuring nearly 32,000 square kilometers (12,000 sq. miles.) in the Northeast corner of Spain. With over 500 kilometers of Mediterranean coastline, stretching from the French border to the Ebro River Delta, Catalonia boasts an extraordinary variety of landscapes packed into a relatively small area (three quarters the size of Switzerland).

To the north, the jagged peaks and alpine meadows of the Pyrenees offer year-round sport facilities for skiers and hikers alike. From the snow-peaked Pyrenees one descends through lush valleys of pine and fir trees, skirting crystal clear lakes and mountain ranges of unbelievably capricious shapes, such as the extinct volcanic parklands around Olot, and further south, the stone spires of legendary Montserrat - a mountain range so unique it has been declared a conservation area by UNESCO.

Montserrat MountainThe mountains gradually give way to Catalonia's fertile interior, with rolling hillsides of vineyards and wheat fields interrupted by long striations of fossil-encrusted ridges. To the southwest, the land becomes flatter and more arid - the colour of the earth changing from hues of burnt umber to ashen gray. Thanks to a hardworking peasantry (and irrigation from the Ebro river) this sun-baked region produces excellent wine, olive oil, and fruit.


Bergueda / Gironella area

The property is situated within 20 kms of Berga, 95 kms northwest of Barcelona, in the central Pyrenean foothills, a scenic area of dairy farms that has been popular with Barcelonans for years.

The nearest villages are Capolat and Esprunyola, about 4 kms away, 1.1 of the way is unpaved but well-kept off road driving. There is a good quality restaurant (with a football pitch in front, oddly enough) just at the turn off the main road to the 1.1 kms to Can Cosme. 3 kms from here is Espunyola, with a bakery and supermarket and a couple of restaurants, including one that does catering and sells prepared foods to take home.

How to get there

Barcelona and Girona airports are the nearest with regular flights departing form around 12 UK airports. Airlines such as Ryanair, BA, Thompsonfly and euroflights offer great flight prices for those on a budget!

There are many car hire companies based at the airport and around the region. They offer a large range of vehicles, to suit every budget. See companies such as Hertz, Europcar and Avis.

The main house: The front door opens on to the large ground floor living/dining/kitchen area. To the right you have the living room spread around the fireplace and TV and stereo. The TV has a DVD player, and the little stereo has CD/radio/cassette and music can be pipped into all the rooms. Every room has a bedside nob for turning on and controlling the volume of the music being played on this stereo.

Around the fireplace there are 2 sofas seating 3, 1 smaller sofa for 2, and two easy chairs. On the other side of the room is the long wooden planked dining table seating about 20 guests. Around the staircase to the back of this large room is the kitchen, not a large kitchen but well-equipped, with fridge, glass ceramic hob, electric oven, extractor, microwave, dishwasher, juicer, toaster, expresso, stick mixer, etc.. The fridge is the normal 1.75m variety, but the owners are putting in a second fridge in time for summer rentals.

The kitchen is sort of tucked in under the staircase, but beyond the kitchen there is a hall leading to the two downstairs bedrooms and the downstairs bathroom. One room with double bed (150 x 200 cm, so big by European standards) is just across from the downstairs bathroom. This is so as to have a bathroom for everyone to use downstairs. At the end of the hall there is another bedroom, this one with two single beds (that were pushed together to form a large double bed the day I visited) and this room has a private bathroom.

Upstairs the first floor has a large central sitting area with another large TV with DVD player, a sofa for 3, two easy chairs, and a card table with 6 chairs. There are a couple of large windows, one overlooking the pool area, and the other one with great views of the magnificent mountains directly behind the house. Just off this central room is a bedroom with double bed and private bath. Down the hall towards the back of the house there are two rooms with single beds and two somewhat larger rooms with double beds. Some of these rooms have quite handsome exposed stone walls, and the bathrooms, while not large, all have nice tilework.

Upstairs the second floor of the house consists of a suite measuring about 50m2, with a private salon with a central table seating 6, and the good-sized bedroom with double bed and an extra bed in a corner, and bathroom beyond. All rooms in the house are external with windows and have nice views, with double glazing, insect screens, and wooden shutters to keep out the light. The decoration is sparse (which is desirable in a rental house) but the walls are painting with nice warm ocres and reds, and everything all the electrics and lighting is quite new and well done

The grounds: Three buildings make up Cal Cosme. In addition to the 330m2 restored farmhouse, there is also a 50m2 covered barn with a ping pong table and a basketball hoop, and the outdoor BBQ area right next to the pool, in front of the house, which has wooden planked seating for about 20, and a sink and counter for food prep and a refridgerator. Both the barn and the BBQ area have lights for night time activity. There is a grassy lawn with some shade trees separating the house from the pool area, and behind the barn there is a wide grassy area where the kids can kick around a football.

Hi Charlie,

Just to let you know that we all had a great holiday. The place (Col Cosme) was amazing, we were really impressed. The standard of the house was excellent, it was so clean and the fact that we all had our own rooms with en-suite made it much easier for everyone. The area is stunning and we done some drives up into the mountains, although it was a bit hairy on the corners sometimes it was worth the trip because we saw some stunning sights.

Pilar and her husband and family were so accommodating upon our arrival - we had lost our other party en-route (you were right, getting out of Barcelona was a nightmare!) and we all didn't arrive until late in two loads and their family who were having a party didn't mind and came to help and drove the other half of our party to the house about an hour or so later. They were so helpful and checked everything was OK.

I can't recommend it enough and was just so impressed with everything. Thank you very much for sorting out all the arrangements and ensuring our holiday was totally enjoyable.

Will be in touch for a holiday next year!!!!!

Our stay at Cal Cosme was delightful. Even though we did not have much luck with the weather, we greatly enjoyed the house and our time there. The house, being a bit isolated, allows for a very calm environment.


The only neighbors are cows so you can enjoy listening to the sound of their bells. The views of the landscape are gorgeous. There are some nice walks / foot trails just around the house, enough to change every day for a
couple of days. The pool has a decent size for playing, a bit small for doing laps. The house is very comfortable with a large living room and fire place.


It is perfect to accommodate a large group of people and the 3 floors allow people to keep their independence. The covered barbecue has a nice size, and it definitely contributed to making our stay very enjoyable. There is a small and flat grass lot just in front of the house, big enough to have a net to play badminton. There are some markets in the city nearby on specific days of the week; you can do grocery shopping by car with a 20min trip one way. We did not try the restaurant nearby the house, but it looked appealing.


We will keep excellent memories from this vacation!

Charlie,
Cal Cosme was a great base for our exploration of Northern Catalunya. The directions from Barcelona were excellent and as we approached the house we realised what a beautiful and dramatic location it occupied. The owners met us on site and were very helpful. We had one incident with the plumbing however the owners soon sorted this out, and a plumber was on hand to put everything right.

We were able to explore the area from Monserrat in the south to Andorra and southern France in the North and tied in a weekend break in Barca on the way home. The whole experience was excellent. As mentioned the house provided an excellent base and had everything we needed (with the exception of a kettle now in place). We explored the local area using Berga as our main town for food and supplies. The kids had a great time in the pool and the outdoor eating area and barbecue meant we ate out every night!
