Garrigue
About the home
Garrigue is an extensive and peaceful property suitable for any age. Each gite is self-contained and self-catering and has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, open plan living/dining room/kitchen - there is a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor of each gite so a couple on their own whether old or young may be just as happy here as a bigger group with or without babies. WIFI and internet available in each gite.
Garrigue is surrounded by varied working farms - cattle, poplars, sunflowers, maize, vines etc. It is 20kms south of the ancient wine town of Bergerac on the Dordogne river, 6kms north of the medieval bastide town of Eymet which boasts that it has held a market every Thursday since June 1270, and 4kms west of little Fonroque which lies on one of the pilgrim routes to Compostela and was an English village in the days of Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Look out for nightingales and hoopoes, swallows and golden orioles, for several years now we have had kestrels nesting in a put-log hole in the wall overlooking the swimming pool, dark red squirrels, deer, lizards, swallow-tails butterflies, stick insects, rhino beetles and glow-worms, shooting stars ...

Enquire nowThe Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Aquitaine is the region that covers South-West France with its sandy Atlantic surfing beaches and glamorous seaside resorts such as Biarritz, to the spectacular mountains of the Pyrenees and then inland to the incomparable beauty of the Dordogne - an area often called the Cradle of Mankind because of the many caves lived in by prehistoric man which you may still visit today and wonder at the paintings they made to illustrate their lives.
The Dordogne is divided into 4 regions known by colours and its pre-Napoleonic name of Périgord - The White Perigord is so-called because of the area's white stones. The Black Perigord for the region's famous truffles of global gastronomic fame, The Green Perigord because there are just so many forests and The Purple Perigord, where we live, because of the grapes in the much-acclaimed Bergerac vineyards.
The Bergerac / Eymet area
Bergerac is a vibrant town with a thriving low cost airlines airport serving England, Scotland, Belgium and the Netherlands. It straddles the Dordogne river, used for hundred of years to transport the wines growing on the sunny sloping vineyards all around down the river to the great wine city of Bordeaux - how about a river trip on one of those boats. A stroll through the timbered houses with their upper floors hanging out over the narrow alleys of old Bergerac takes one's imagination back to the 17th century times of the legendary Cyrano de Bergerac.
Eymet, our nearest town has held a weekly market since June 1270 whose popularity does not seem to have been dented by the excellent new Carrefour supermarket on the edge of town. Eymet is proud of its origins and holds a medieval festival every summer with jousting and street theatre and a banquet in the square with many locals and visitors dressed in medieval fashion for the occasion !
