The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Historically the department of the Dordogne was created in 1790 taking its name from the main river winding through the region. Before that time this same area was known as Perigord and is still known thus today. The Perigord is divided into four regions, and our area is called the Perigord Pourpre or PurplePerigord, taking its name from this wine-growing region. Wine tasting opportunities are plentiful and difficult to resist! St Emilion just 35kms is always worth a visit not only for it's wine but also for it's medieval buildings.
The pace of life here takes its rhythm from the River Dordogne as it gently winds its way to Bordeaux.; a fast and vibrant city one hour's drive to the west, with its 18c architecture and excellent city shopping. Here, however, the countryside is picturesque, the traffic is minimal, and there are chateaux to visit, caves to explore and medieval walled towns and villages to visit.
Spring arrives early here with mild sunny days in March and April gently easing into May and June's very warm long hours of sunshine and light evenings that seem to stretch on for ever. Then Summer arrives in a blast of heat with rising temperatures allowing outdoor acivities their full potential. Summer markets are everywhere and even the smallest of villages has an annual free firework display. The region holds an annual Felibree festival on the first weekend in July which draws 25,000 visitors each year for a journey into the Dordogne's romantic past and the Occitan language (langue d'Oc). It takes place in a different town every year and for 2009 it is at Beaumont du Perigord just 1 hour away.
Throughout the day visitors can discover traditional trades from the region where the langue d'Oc is spoken, such as basket-making and clog-making. Everywhere there are colourful traditional costumes and dancing in the streets which are decorated with thousands of flower garlands. It is an event not to be missed.
Bergerac / Ste Foy la Grande area
Bergerac has quaint old streets to explore, enticing small restaurants and bars to discover, and museums..You can also take a boat trip on one of the traditional gabares, a flat bottomed craft used originally for trading up and down the Dordogne
Visit nearby Chateau Monbazillac built in 1550 to discover its history and at the end of the visit enjoy a relaxing wine tasting. Monbazillac is golden, smooth with a heady aroma and is best enjoyed chilled as an aperitif or perhaps with a rather 'wicked' dessert.
French markets are renowned for their fresh produce and Ste Foy la Grande has one of the top 100 in France. The produce is fresh, local and has endless possibilities for a picnic, BBQ, something cold and delicious or maybe a traditional meal. Accompanied by the local wines, this means preparing sumptuous and memorable meals is an effortless pleasure.
Local activities in the area are numerous. Try your hand at canoeing, quad biking, jet skiing, paintball, tennis, horse riding the list is endless.
At the Lac de Gurson just 15kms away through wooded countryside you can spend all day lakeside 'on the beach'. There is a giant water slide numerous small restaurants and bars, horse riding and an activity path around the lake.
Castillon la Bataille is just half an hour's drive to the west. From mid-July to mid-August 800 medieval re-enactors bring to life the last major battle of the Hundred Years War in a captivating two-hour spectacle, filled with stunts, special effects and explosive expertise.

We have all enjoyed a wonderful holiday. Great accommodation in a beautiful setting. Pool was the icing on the cake! only wish we could stay longer. Looking forward to the next time. The Harmer Family East Sussex
Fabulous holiday in a lovely part of France with excellent weather. The pool was wonderful. We enjoyed a BBQ every evening (except one) and the fresh food and fish was very good. Canoeing on the Dordogne was great fun.
Go-Karting is also good value. Good tennis courts in Port Ste Foy and we had a go at Quad biking. We've had a wonderful time. Many thanks to Felicity and Alan for their hospitality and welcome. D'Almeida & Parker families.
This is our third visit to Bellevue and yet again we had a wonderful relaxing week. All of us feel so welcome here. We enjoy the pool and playing our boules tournament and the table tennis has given us a great laugh. We thank you for making our holiday great yet again. Will see you again soon. Elkin & Clark Family
This was our first stay in a 'Gite' and we found it very welcoming and relaxing. Beautiful setting and views. The pool was lovely. We've had a lovely time and will happily recommend to friends. Many thanks and good wishes. Mick and Jan Worthington.
We have been very pleased with the 'Gite' and all its facilities. The young ladies were especially thrilled with the swimming pool. We have enjoyed visits to Bergerac and St Emilion and the markets at Montpon and Castillon. Thank you Alan and Felicity for picking a beautiful position and doing such a good job in turning it into an ideal family holiday destination. Family Lewis and Family Ford
We will take home wonderful memories of our holiday at Bellevue, particularly the lovely gite, swimming pool and fantastic views. We also enjoyed Bergerac, canoeing on the Dordogne and our nightly barbecues, followed by stargazing. Great holiday, location and weather. Thanks Alan and Felicity.
