The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

Bordeaux and Bergerac are famous wine producing regions and the French are reknown for their cuisine. The vineyards and medieval village of Sainte Emilion are a 40 minute drive from the gite. However, there is so much more to the area than eating and drink the superb food and heavenly wine.
Chateau, bastide towns, prehistoric cave paintings, water sports, boules, golf and horseriding to name just a few of the other things to do and see. The last battle from the 100 years war was fought 30 minutes away from the gite at Castillon la Bataille and it is reenacted every year which is an amazing spectacle. The river is the focus of much activity and throughout the year there are numerous firework displays that light up the Dordogne in all its glory.
The Bergerac / Ste Foy la Grande area
Sainte Foy la Grande is a bustling small town that has a very popular market. The locals as well as visitors come from all around to check out the food stalls, fresh fish, cheese, meats, speciality produce and vegetables, which are all are colourfully displayed. Other stalls contain local handicrafts as well as the usual clothes and entertainment stalls.
The town itself has all the amentities. Two large supermarkets and several smaller ones, a hospital, clinics, doctors, dentists, shops, boutiques, garages, restaurants, bakeries, bars and everything you normally need. Bastille day is a favourite holiday. On this day and for many other occasions, Sainte Foy closes its centre to traffic so that its inhabitants and visitors can stroll the streets, eating, drinking and taking in the entertainment.
Bergerac is a short drive away. Linked to Cyrano de Bergerac, Bergerac has much to offer, including trips on the river, fine dining and again famous for its wine.
