Appt 1, 4 Rue Merline
About the home
The apartment, providing deceptively spacious and airy accommodation, offers the best of both worlds; it offers a quiet haven whilst being at the hub of leisure amenities. There is a large comfortable lounge with a small kitchen area where you can prepare items from the excellent market held Wednesdays and Saturdays, although you probably won't be doing much cooking when you see what the nearby restaurants have on offer at prices to suit all pockets.
The apartment is great for those wanting a carless break. We can pick you up at the airport and have you at the apartment in a matter of minutes - no long bus or taxi drives!

Situated in the Perigord Pourpre region, Bergerac lies on the banks of the River Dordogne. It has a long history and has some interesting places to visit, and boasts some excellent restaurants. There is a twice weekly marker and a brocante (antique market) in the old town on 1st Sunday of each month during the summer.
It is a well known winemaking region registered under the French appellation controllee system, and the Museum de Vin is only a few minutes walk away from the apartment.
This historic town has good examples of medieval architecture and during the 18th and 19th centuries was one of France's major ports, trading mainly in wood and tobacco. It boasts some excellent restaurants offering a range of menus to suit all tastes and pockets. There are numerous events throughout the summer months and the lively nature of the town makes it an ideal destination for either short breaks, or as a base for longer holidays.
For those with a car there is golf 20 minutes drive away at Chateau Vigier and horseriding 10 minutes drive near Ginestet. (Car hire available from agency 10 minute walk away.)
Further details
The apartment is accessed by internal stairs so regretfully is suitable only for able bodied guests.
The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Bergerac, capital of Périgord Pourpre, lies on the riverbank of the Dordogne. The département of Périgord Pourpre takes its name from the wine-growing region concentrated in its southwest corner and is most famous for the sweet white wines produced around Monbazillac just across the river from Bergerac.
Once a flourishing port for the wine and tobacco trade, it is still the main market town for the area. The twice weekly market is well worth a visit and sells a wealth of local produce.
The Bergerac area
The vieille ville (old town) is a calm and pleasant area to wander through and provides good examples of late medieval architecture. In rue de l'Ancien-Pont, the splendid seventeenth-century Maison Peyrarède houses an informative Musée du Tabac (Tues–Sat 10am–noon & 2–6pm, Sun 2.30–6pm), detailing the history of the weed, with collections of pipes and tools of the trade.
Other museums include the small Musée Régional de la Batellerie in rue des Conférences in the heart of the old town (Tues–Sat 10am–noon & 2–5.30pm; €1), with displays on viticulture, barrel-making and the town's once-bustling river-trading past.

We booked the apartment only a few days in advance and the owners were very helpful and also very flexible towards arriving and leaving time. The apartment is ideally located in the old center of Bergerac. We rented the first floor apartment : very spacious, well equipped, double glazing (no noice from outside). There was a free bottle of wine, fresh milk in the fridge, coffee, tea and sugar. We had trouble finding a parking space (Saturday 14.00) - as most places only take a 2 hour payment. However, the owners told us that there was free parking at the port. We would definitely recommend this apartment and if we ever visit Bergerac again, we will book it again ! |

The owners of the apartment kindly picked us up from the train station in the evening and had provided a bottle of wine on our arrival. The apartment was very nicely presented and we loved the ancient wattle and daub wall. The apt. was situated across from a friendly local pub and had several restaurants nearby and was very close to a small supermarket. It was a very easy and enjoyable walk into the centre of Bergerac. We enjoyed a bus ride to Sarlat and took a taxi to the local wine chateau. It was a very enjoyable week. |
