The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The south of the Dordogne is famous for its 13th c bastide towns and beautiful rolling countrside. The majestic Dordogne river flows through Bergerac, a large bustling town just 20kms away.

The old quarter with its timber framed houses and cobbled streets meandering down to the river is a 'must see'.

There are numerous restaurants, bars and a monthly antique market. Boat trips from the quay in the old town are always popular.

Bergerac

La Vieille Grange is in Lestang a small hamlet of approximately ten houses and farms, part of the commune of Ste.Innocence. A peaceful area of vines, sunflowers and arable crops in gentle rolling countryside.

The 13th c bastide town of Eymet is 7km away and is a beautiful and vibrant place in the summer months with weekly night and day markets. A succession of festivals are one of the highlights of a summer in Eymet.

An ideal place to find a restaurant or just sit in a bar with a glass of the local goodness and watch the world go by.

You will be spoilt for choice of beautiful places to visit. Monpazier, Villerreal, Beaumont and the Sunday market at Issigeac are just some of the places that spring to mind.

There is always something going on and there is always the wonderful local food and wine to get to know.

"Lovely lovely place to chill."

John and Susie were fabulous hosts. Welcoming, helpful but never intrusive. The house and gardens were just lovely - I guess just what you imagine to be French country shabby chic! The surrounding area was great too. You would need transport to the local villages but most villages were picturesque, many having good food or crafty markets. Lots of atmosphere with cafés and bars with plenty of reasonably priced wine. Beautiful countryside, full of sunflowers, vineyards and little quirky hamlets complete with a chateau here there and everywhere!

Very briefly - a gem of a place to stay!

"5-Star!"

We stayed at La Vieille Grange in 2010,driving down from Ouistreham in a day, while others of the family flew into Bergerac airport from various British destinations over the two-week period. The house is in the country-side almost mid-way between the towns of Bergerac and Eymet, but only a few minutes from a boulangerie in Fonroq for fresh morning bread, or a small Carrefour in Sigoules.

La Vieille Grange was so comfortable, clean, and well-equipped ;the kitchen had masses of china, cutlery, serving dishes and pans including the most enormous paella pan which held enough for all the family. Bedding was crisp, clean and changed at the end of a week. There were books, music, tv, games .
Outside of the house there are tables in sun or under the shady wisteria-covered trellis, a superb salt-water pool which John attends to each end of the day, with plenty of seating around it , a volley-ball net for the active youngsters, a hammock for lying in to look at the stars. It would be hard to think of anything else that you could possibly need.

John and Susie are wonderful hosts; their welcome pack of bread, croissants, butter , milk, jam and wine is just the start. They live only yards away but are unobtrusive, yet there when needed. They can suggest towns to visit for day-time markets or evening fiesta, restaurants in every price bracket, and when you return from trips out you may well find a little bowl of tomatoes or fruit from their garden sitting on one of the tables in your garden.

This property is superb and worth going back to - unless like us you were unable to get the weeks you needed the following year because others had the same idea! This year we returned alone to use their comfortable one-bed gite - but that's for a different review .
