The Chai at Le Clos du Verger, Bergerac,
Farmhouse | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
Just 5 minutes from the lovely and lively old town of Bergerac on the banks of the Dordogne in the Périgord, Le Clos du Verger is a former farmstead set in a good hectare of land in a gentle and green valley leading up to extensive forests and the village of Maurens.
Whether you are looking for a lazy stay in the country, or an active holiday with outdoor sports high on your agenda, or you plan to spend your time visiting this beautiful and remarkable area of France with its castles, its caves and their extraordinary paintings, its beautiful small villages, the vineyards, forests and meandering rivers, our comfortable and well placed accommodation will add to the pleasure of your holiday.
You might just want to stay put with a lunch time picnic by the stream, lulled by the tumbling waterfall, and a book from our library, and perhaps a barbeque on the terrace in the evening. The ball games area near the stream includes in the summer months a small goal and a badminton/volleyball net.
THE CHAI sleeps 4 people. It is the former wine barn next to the principal buildings. It is built in mellow stone and the large terrace overlooks the gardens and countryside beyond.
Inside there is a spacious living room, two bedrooms, and a generously sized shower room. The property is comfortably furnished, cool in summer thanks to its construction and warm in winter with underfloor heating and a woodburning stove.
The living room has wide french windows on to the terrace, where there is an outside sitting area, and dining table and chairs. Inside there are two sofas around the coffee table near the fireplace, satellite TV (French TNT satellite link), books, games, DVDs, broadband internet, dining table and chairs, and a well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, fridge freezer, induction hob, oven/grill.
Bedroom 1: 5' double bed
Bedroom 2: 3' twin beds
Both bedrooms have excellent clothes storage and comfortable beds.
Shower room with double size shower unit, double washbasins, and WC.
Customers with some mobility problems may like to know that beds are not the low type so easy to get in and out of.
Cot and high chair available on request. There is a laundry room on site. Let us know if you also want a phone in the property (extra charge).
Prices and availability quoted here are for self catering bookings at the Chai.
Environmentally friendly - Heating and hot water are from a ground source supply and half the electricity we use on the site is offset by our photovoltaic panels.
The tourist information in the properties includes local maps, walks and cycle rides, places to visit with children, local events.
Each property has a toy box or cupboard, a small library of books and DVDs, and English/French dictionary.
Outside there is a selection of outside games in the summer in the games area near the stream. We invite you to use the round walk from the buildings at the top end of the site, past the goat paddocks to the relaxation area by the stream (which includes our bamboo "forest", the main stream which disappears over a waterfall into a mini gorge, the mill stream, a couple of garden seats in different places, and a ball games area). We are also developing a woodland walk - still some growing to do as many of the trees have only been planted recently, but there are orchids and wild flowers to enjoy as the path winds back up towards the buildings.
Food - The village baker delivers to our site twice a week and there is a good range of supermarkets and specialist food shops in Bergerac,as well as an excellent twice weekly market. Local products from our village include chocolates and patisserie, honey, foie gras and other patés.
Vineyards are on the hill beyond our stream with a good choice of local wines available straight from the producers. If you are planning a special meal we can put you in touch with local catering companies.
We are no more than 5 minutes drive to the edge of Bergerac. There is horse riding only 5 minutes away, a treetop trail 10 minutes away, and a choice of canoeing venues within 20 minutes. If you enjoy fishing, there are private trout lakes and a carp lake (prebooking) within a short drive and river fishing if you get a short stay licence.
Bike hire offered by a specialist operator: Excellent prices include helmets, locks, delivery and collection. Couple package - 100 euros for 5 day hire, 150 euros for 10 days. Or 2 adults/2 children package for 5 days from 150 euros, 10 days from 250 euros. Our own tourist information includes maps and cycle routes, including nearby waymarked routes.
A good day out in the summer months is with Bergerac Wine Tours who will pick you up here in the morning and take you on a personal tour of their vineyard contacts as well as sharing with you a delightfully rustic lunch as part of your day.
We take bookings for any time of the year.
Spring starts early here. Summer speaks for itself. Autumn is lovely and there are still regular flights to Bergerac airport if you want a short break. The property is well heated so warm and cosy in winter. It is a great time to see the famous Lascaux cave paintings and other famous sites which are open throughout the year. The winters are short, occasionally severe, but we can often be sitting out for lunch in warm sun in January and February. We offer a special deal for one month bookings between October and March.
Most people come by car but it is possible to just have bikes here, and we have even had guests who have just relied on their two feet. If necessary we can pick you up from Bergerac station, and make sure you get access to some food shopping.
If you enjoy fishing we will help you get a local license to cover your stay. Or we can put you in touch with the owners of a natural lake, well stocked with carp, in a lovely spot half an hour away - they offer fishing by the day or it is possible to hire the whole lake for 3 days or more.

Our site is over a hectare, bordered by a green lane on one side, and a stream at the bottom of the site. The buildings and the gardens take up the front of the site, which slopes gently down to our paddocks and a variety of trees including 30+ fruit and walnut trees. Part of it is reserved for our use, including one barn waiting to be restored, but the rest you are welcome to explore, and some guests enjoy a daily walk down to the stream. There are a couple of benches dotted about in shady areas and a dedicated grassy area for ball games in the field, away from the buildings, with a small goal and a volleyball/basketball net (football size ball and rackets/shuttlecocks provided).
We have a few small goats grazing one of the meadows and chickens in the orchard.
PARKING - The parking area is to one side of the site, and a path (lit at night) goes through the gardens to The Chai. We are always available on your arrival to help carry your luggage. If your party includes anyone with very reduced mobility we may be able to make a special parking arrangement
Smokers - no smoking inside please.
The Aquitaine/Dordogne region
The Dordogne, or the Périgord as the French call it, is a rural part of France with forests, small farms, orchards and vineyards. It is delightfully French with fine food and strong traditions. It is an excellent place for an activity type holiday, for just chilling out, for tracking down special wines, or for visits to historical sites and beautiful locations.
People come for the wealth of beautiful villages and small towns. There is no big city although one of France's principle cities, Bordeaux, is within an hour and a half's drive and is well worth a visit.
Visitors are astounded by the historical sites, spanning the centuries from early man. The beautiful Lascaux cave paintings are known and admired throughout the world yet they were only discovered in the twentieth century and are only one of many notable sites just down that one river valley. All around us you can trace the centuries through the strongly fortified medieval castles, the bastide villages of the Hundred Year's war, followed by the flowering of the Renaissance.
Just from the historical context there is more to see and do than you will probably fit into your holiday here. Add to that the multitude of village events, the excellent markets, sports such as canoeing, cycling, golf and horseriding, lovely places to eat, the genuinely friendly welcome and a holiday here will give you a taste of a truly delightful corner of Europe.
Until the early twentieth century Bergerac was for hundreds of years predominantly a town dedicated to the wine trade, with the old town jostling behind the river port on the Dordogne.
It is big enough to provide a good range of individual shops and a large market, as well as offering a lively cultural life. For several months each summer the beautiful old town hosts nightly events - and often you can join in for free - as well as specific festivals at weekends. Mid week entertainment includes dancing in one of the squares, jazz concerts, and a regular "brocante" or antiques market. Just wandering around is fun! Even better is to stop at a pavement café for a quick drink or a leisurely meal and watch the world of Bergerac go past. Bergerac even has a music hall if you want to try a fun night of Moulin Rouge type entertainment. All this is just an easy drive - no more than ten minutes from our property to the car parks in the middle of town.
Maurens is our commune although we are as close to Bergerac as to the village itself. The baker delivers to us twice a week, and the postman collects any letters we want to post. You will probably need a car or bikes when staying with us but we will also point out some pleasant walks. We are surrounded by meadows and fields and the nearest vineyard is just up the(steep!)hill. Up the road the forest begins. Some of it is worked for timber although most is deciduous forest that has been left to go to its own devices, and is cut through with tracks and paths. There is a lovely round walk from the centre of Maurens using part of the old pilgrim trails.
Maurens has a busy summer ahead! There is a two day medieval festival at the end of May. The whole village is preparing for a day of activity round the Tour de France on 26th July (the time trial passes our property) and also in July there is a week long outdoor theatre festival. In mid August anyone can join the village walk - it is always a lovely way to pass a summer morning.

"Unprofessional owner spoilt our Christmas"
We a booked this Gite for a quiet Christmas get away, it ticked all the boxes. We arrived at the time we agreed with the owners, only to be accused of being early Martin, one of the owners. He then g… More
So very sorry that Mr Brown did not feel comfortable here by the end of his stay, and even more so that he considers us unprofessional. I think it fair to say that we did not always feel quite comfortable with him either but hoped we had done our best to offer our usual welcome. I agree I was wrong footed on their arrival as he indicated the party would arrive after lunch and I was just finishing the final hoovering when they arrived at 1 pm. For parking we have a communal carpark and allot each property a space, so that it works well for all users. I checked once the party had settled in that all was well, and they seemed pleased. We try and be helpful to our guests. Mr Brown does not mention that we agreed they could bring their lovely dog, under certain conditions. One of the conditions of the stay was that the animal should not be left on his own in the property. We discussed that in an email before the guest made the booking, but on their arrival afternoon the dog was left for two hours on his own. He was a young dog and understandably distressed at being left so soon after a long journey so barked loudly for the time they were away. We sorted that out with them and appreciated the fact that they did not leave him on his own again. We did our best to make the dog feel welcome too, but the owners probably didn't realise that it was difficult for us as their dog management régime was not the same as ours. Our expectations are perhaps too high for we are used to highly trained working animals. This meant that as the week went on having a dog on site became more intrusive than we have experienced in the past and created tensions, which we tried to contain but my husband requested, on what turned out to be their last morning, that Mr Brown be more attentive about the freedom of the dog in our communal areas, shared by other guests and ourselves. Perhaps my husband was wrong to then raise the issue again more strongly, when the matter was not addressed by our guest, in which case we apologise. It was shortly after that the Brown family started to pack up to leave. We thought they were leaving to break up their long journey back to the UK, for I had organised a vet's appointment for them earlier that morning so the dog's paperwork was in order for them to return to the UK. We have learned from this complaint that maybe we should not have dogs here even though it has worked in the past perfectly well. We will therefore reconsider our policy.
