BookThe Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The department of the Dordogne is in the Aquitaine region of south-west France (Le Manoir is approximately 60 miles inland from Bordeaux in an easterly direction). The Dordogne is famous for its wines such as Pecharment and Monbazillac; its food, including duck, foie gras and truffles. Exciting visits include the prehistoric caves at Lascaux and, of course, the Dordogne valley itself with its spectacular scenery and many dramatic and beautiful chateaux.
You will enjoy some of the best sights if you take a canoe down the Dordogne.
The Dordogne area is renowned for its long hot summers, the warm and pleasant weather usually extending from April to late October.
The Bergerac / St. Marcel du Perigord area
There is just so much to do in summer, it often overwhelms our guests, & they unwind by the swimming pool!
Your first Sunday will often be spent visiting the market at ISSIGEAC, a medieval bastide town which is beautiful in its own right, but with the added attraction of a vibrant Sunday Market.
The kids will love Castelnaud, perched high over the River Dordogne: It offers the them a medieval war museum.
Nearby is my favourite Chateau; Chateau Milandes; The home of Josephine Baker, an American Cabaret artist who adopted a child from each continent. This is where they lived, & the chateau is a museum about her.
There is so much that you will not want to miss! – Where to stop!
You must visit Domme, & Sarlat.
Finally, I nearly forgot! – If you are here in July & August the Marche Nocturnes are good fun.
They are a bit like a mediaeval banquet. – You sit at communal tables & choose food from the many stalls offering cooked local produce.

I could not believe the roads we travelled to get to the house, you would need to be an accomplished driver to take them on. The house was quite dark as was surrounded by trees. My bedroom and the... more |
