Home description
Granges Haut is a beautiful group of 15th Century Chateau outbuildings and houses with a superb swimming pool complex. Set in 6 acres of rolling countryside nestling on the hillside below the pretty village church and old chateau of Cahuzac, we are on the Dordogne/ Lot-et-Garonne border in South West France.
The Bastide town of Castillonnes (with all facilities) is only 3km and Bergerac Airport is 15 mins drive. Our property has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (2 en-suite), oak beamed ceilings, white stone walls and an enormous stone fireplace in the living room. The beautiful pool area has outstanding views in every direction and features a 13m x 6m salt water pool, a 4m x 3m children's pool, and a large covered terraced area with a WC. We have a 16 ft diameter in-ground trampoline, swings and climbing frame with a slide. For those who want to keep in touch with the 'outside world' we have WiFi broadband and free telephone usage (ask for details).
Granges Haut sits in glorious countryside amidst rolling hills with fields of sunflowers and acres of vineyards covering the landscape. We are 20 km south of Bergerac and 30 km north of Villeneuve-sur-Lot. The beautiful historic medieval Bastide towns of Castillonnes, Eymet, Villereal, Monflanquin and Monpazier are all within easy reach.
All local towns hold markets selling local produce at least once a week, and really come alive during the summer months with evening markets, street carnivals and medieval festivals. We are on the edge of the Bergerac vineyards and not far from the Bordeaux and Duras wine regions. Most of the local vineyards offer wine tasting on site. The attractions of the Dordogne, it's river, villages and famous caves are easily accessible.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The Dordogne is known as an area of outstanding natural beauty and one of the most beautiful places in Europe, not dissimilar to Tuscany. This is a green land of farms, lovely wooded hillsides and gentle winding rivers. The area is still relatively unspoilt making it an ideal location for those who enjoy the great outdoors.
It is one of the gastronomic centres of France after Lyon and is particularly famous for its foie gras; duck, truffles; mushrooms and seafood. There are many excellent inexpensive restaurants in the area serving traditional cuisine.
It is also well known for its wines. The world famous vineyards of Medoc and St Emilion are close by and the local wines of Bergerac; Monpazier and Cahors are also excellent.
The area is rich in pageantry. The English ruled Aquitaine for 300 years in the Middle Ages under the Plantaganets and there are many castles, bastide towns and fortified churches to visit.
The Dordogne and Vezere valleys are world famous for the art of prehistoric man at Lascaux, known as the 'birthplace of art'.
Bergerac / Castillonnes area
Granges haut is 4 km from the bastide town of castillones and close to Eymet, Villereal, Monflanquin and Issigeac.
Food, wine & local attractions The area offers many restaurants and bars: Castillonnes has 5 restaurants with a variety of menus, Lalandusse (2km) has a small restaurant, Lauzun (8km) has 2 restaurants, (one a very good Indian), Issigeac (10 km) has 5 restaurants and Eymet (15km) has 7 restaurants. We are on the edge of the Bergerac vineyards with Duras and Bordeaux vineyards a little further away, giving of hundreds of opportunities to visit, taste and buy wine. There are leisure lakes at Lougratte (10km) and Miramont (22 km) with swimming, sporting & leisure activities for all ages. In Bergerac there is an Aquapark, crazy golf and canoes for hire on the River Dordogne. Other local activities include, go-karting, horse riding, donkey & trap hire, tennis and rambling. Further afield there is a theme park in Agen called Parc Walibi, an adventure park 'Parc-en-Ciel' nr Lacapelle Biron, The Aquarium and Artisan Village at Le Bugue and the famous Lascaux Caves at Montignac.
Golf There are 5 golf courses and a driving range within 30 minutes drive of Granges Haut: Chateau des Vigiers, 18 hole course (at Monestier 38 km ), Les Mirandes, 18 hole course (at Plaisance 5 km), Villeneuve Sur Lot Golf & Country Club, 18 hole course (at Castelnaud 25 km), Tomeboeuf, 9 hole course (at Tomeboeuf 21 km), Chateau les Merles, 9 hole course (at Mouleydier 31 km). There is also a Driving Range at the Centre de Golf Bergeracois (at Bergerac 20 km).
With children in mind We can buy baby products for you locally to be available at the house on your arrival (e.g. nappies). High chairs, cots, stair-gates, a moses basket, a wireless baby monitor, a baby gym and more are available without charge. The pool complex has a 4 x 3 metre 40 cm (15 inch) deep pool for little ones. The main pool has wide steps and a large flat area (95cm deep) for the first 4 m, which is great for those who are less confident in the water. The pool building has a large covered area which provides plenty of shade if you want it, and a WC - so no need to rush back to the house. There is a massive 4.9 metre (16ft) diameter in-ground trampoline, swings, slide, climbing frame and ‘stepping stones’. They have all been tested and approved by our kids. There are lots of toys for the children and games for all ages (e.g. boules and garden Jenga). We have 60+ DVD children’s titles available including Disney Classics. We can offer a baby-sitting service (subject to availability).
