Bergerac is the largest town in the Perigord Pourpre departement, an area which derives its name from the purple grapes that grow in the region's vineyards. The most famous wines are the sweet whites produced around Monbazillac. Located in the plains of the Dordogne, Bergerac is scattered with remnants from an interesting and often violent past. Although the town endured much damage as a Protestant stronghold in the 16th century, a lot has been done to restore the older city, making Bergerac a great base from which to explore the area.

Bergerac offers a range of sports and leisure activities, including mini-golf, tennis, cinema, local shops and walks in the nearby Gabarres sur la Dordogne.

Four colours for four areas forming the one and only Perigord.

* LE PERIGORD VERT (Green Perigord):

The Northern part of Perigord is a green gem, hilly and crisscrossed with streams. This is where you will also find the Perigord-Limousin National Park.

* LE PERIGORD BLANC (White Perigord):

Located in the centre of the Perigord area, this is mostly a limestone plateau with large meadows, with rivers Auvezere and Isle running through it.

* LE PERIGORD NOIR (Black Perigord):

This part of Perigord owes its name to the dark colour of oaktree leaves, it is also famous for its prehistoric sites and landscapes, its mediaeval villages and castles hanging to the edge of cliffs. Come and visit Lascaux, Montignac, Sarlat...

The Perigord of vineyards (hence the colour...) located towards the mouth of River Dordogne, come and enjoy this newly established wine country.
