The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
This region offers crystal clean air and fertile ground in which truffles, nuts and mushrooms flourish, and the local farmers breed geese and ducks to produce the world's most exquisite foie gras. The hot Summer here is perfect for the vine, where local vineyards produce globally acclaimed wines and many other regional tipples, like Vin d'Noix.
There are many places of historical interest well worth a visit. All the local Bastide towns of Eymet, Monflanquin, Castillonnes, Villereal and the simply beautiful villages of Monpazier, Issigeac (with its beautiful medieval houses and bishops palace), Pujols and Penne d'Agenais with its winding streets and the church at the summit of the hill are all within easy drive. These Bastide towns, so characteristic of the area, were constructed by both the French and the English when this area was fought over during the 100 Years War and the towns frequently changed hands, in the case of Castillonnes having been divided down the middle for many years.
There are many interesting places for walkers and day trips. The renowned prehistoric sites of the eastern Dordogne, the famous cave paintings at Lascaux especially, the old cave dwellings including Roc St Christophe and many caves with wall paintings, etc. There are also the very pretty towns of Sarlat, Domme set on top of the hills, Roc Gageac on a cliff beside the river and the castles of Beynac and Biron.
Bergerac / Eymet area
One of the most popular villages in the area is Eymet, just 2Km from us, making us a perfect location for enjoying this beautiful historic Bastide village. As well as having some of the best restaurants in the area, Eymet hosts the famous night-time market throughout the months of July and August, along with the traditional antique market on a Thursday. In fact there are markets for every day of the week spanning across all the local villages, each boasting their own specialities of fresh produce, wines, cheeses or traditional art. During the summer months there are local festivals and fetes galore for you to enjoy or take the time toexplore the exquisite chateaux of the area. There are several golf courses ranging from 10 minutes to 60 minutes drive away, which include the famous French course at Chateau Vigier. The Dropt, Dordogne and the Vizhre rivers offer either tranquil, or exciting canoeing and boating, with excellent fishing points in all directions. There are masses of tracks for walking and cycling, and horse riding stables can be found locally at Sadillac. Interesting places for walkers and day trips include The prehistoric sites of the eastern Dordogne, the famous cave paintings at Lascaux, the old cave dwellings including Roc St Christophe and many caves with wall paintings, etc. There are also the very pretty towns of Sarlat, Domme set on top of the hills, Roc Gageac on a cliff beside the river and the castles of Beynac and Biron. Finally, the small wine growing town of St Emilion on the road to Bordeaux is not to be missed.
